Dreams
Dreams, no not the Fleetwood Mac song, the ones that you have while sleeping. People have been dreaming for years. Dreams give evidence that the unconscious exists, something that Freud vehemently believed in. Some people like to read into their dreams and ascertain their meanings. However, it has been suggested that the interpretations often just reflect the thoughts of the awake mind. Dreaming is not an inherent function of REM sleep, it results from the different forms of cerebral activation during sleep. It involves many brain structures that are also functioning while a person is awake. This research has been going on for a while and dates back to the famous psychologist Sigmund Freud. Freud was passionate about the unconscious and he concluded that the unconscious processes motivate every behavior, thought, and feeling. This included dreaming behaviors as well. Freud studied dreams and determined that dreams are fulfillments of wishes. Freud believed that while a person is sleeping, his true self comes out. During the day, a person can resist his impulses, but at night there is nothing to stop them. According to Freud, there are two drives, sex and aggression, that powerfully control everyone silently they constantly challenge the mind as they try to be released. However, many people don’t agree with this. Freud also believed that the function of dreams is to hold back the excitation in the unconscious, which can surface during sleep. These impulses come about because resistances against knowing our true selves become diminished. Dreams show a person’s subconscious conflicts and the meaning of dreams often do not make sense to the dreamer. When it came to actually interpreting a person’s dream, Freud used what he already knew about a person to determine what the meaning of a dream to be.
