Fitzgerald left this sentence unfinished because he wanted the reader to make an assumption about what would happen based on Gatsby. The author wants the reader to make the assumption that one morning our dreams might be accomplished or be like Gatsby where his dreams fell apart in the end and he died. In the story, the green light on Daisy’s dock is referred to as Gatsby’s dream. “ I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. This happens especially in Gatsby’s dreams . His dreams are based on a past relationship he had with Daisy. As a human being, more is always wanted. Gatsby was unable to base his dreams on the future and that Daisy had moved on. This is more important that one’s actual desires because when someone dreams about something the dream is usually better than reality. Another reason, it is more important is because humans can never be satisfied with what they have. There is a constant want to strive for more. The characters in the book can be an example of this. “ I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe.” ( 35) Myrtle was unhappy with her marriage because she wanted more. She wanted her husband to be wealthy which is why she had an affair with Tom. Myrtle wanted to be apart of the rich people and she often dressed like them. Another example, that dreams aren’t based on future beliefs is Tom Buchanan. He still acts as if he was still a college football player, intimidating people with his body. Also having multiple affairs while he is married and has a kid. “ Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward.” (7) Tom was around 35 years old and still behaved like a 20 year old guy in college.
