Within the Old Testament there significant characters that go through a reversal of fortune and the similarities between each of their stories. For most the reversal of fortune happens after being chosen and anointed by God and take over the role that he had destined for them. Some of these significant characters are Moses, Gideon, and David. Accordingly, their experiences are similar in their portrayal and the description and their status in life. Consequently, one notices that they would doubt themselves on whether they could carry out what God wanted when he called upon them. He was an insignificant character that lived in an even more insignificant tribe and happened to be chosen by God to save the Israelites from the Midianites, characterized as a major judge of the Bible. The judges were in place to keep the order and the purity of the customs set forth by God in the covenant. The prophet came to Gideon and told him that through him God will deliver Israel. At first, Gideon too doubted himself and proved himself to God after he refused to be king and declared God would be the ruler over Israel. After accepting God’s words and with God’s guidance was incredibly successful in beating the Midianites. After defeating the Midianites, he went on to defeat other groups and became a very skilled military strategist. His fortune altered when he disobeyed God and went against his rule about worshiping other gods. Gideon decided to use ban/ spoils of war from the Midianites and use their jewelry to make idols. Ultimately, due to his arrogance, he became a hypocrite. Formally referred to as “the one who cuts down forbidden objects” Gideon started worshipping the same idols. Not only did this have an effect on him, it also had an effect on his lineage.
