The United States did not agree with the spread of communism so they sided with South Vietnam. The U.S happened to get involved due to wanting to stop the war because they didn’t want it to spread. It impacted the world due to it being the first war to become televised and people were upset because people were dying.
The 1960s were a weird time in the United States. In the beginning of this decade, John F. Kennedy was elected, and there was a sense of optimism throughout the United States. That optimism soon turned into doubt. President Kennedy was shot in Texas, and Lyndon B. Johnson had to take over. Soon thereafter, President Johnson had to deal with all of the problems going on in Vietnam.
The Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975, was one of the most divisive and controversial conflicts in American history. It was a military conflict between the Communist North Vietnam, and South Vietnam, with the United States and other Western powers supporting the Southern Vietnamese. The war was fought in the context of the Cold War because the United States feared that Communism would spread throughout Southeast Asia if North Vietnam managed to take control of the entire country. The war had such a profound impact on American society, and still remains a subject of intense debate and analysis today. After World War I, Vietnamese leader, Ho Chi Minh, expressed many grievances against the French colonialists.
The Vietnam War was one of the longest lasting conflicts in American history starting on November 1st, 1955. Dwight Eisenhower began the United States' involvement with the Vietnam War by creating the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization to help squelch communist uprisings in the area. With conflicts growing between the Communist North Vietnamese and the anti- Communist South Vietnamese the U.S sent the first troops in 1965 to aid in stopping the spread of Communism. Even after 41 years of the war being over people still debate the legality of the vietnam war. Some say under the international laws of war it was legal and just for America to intervene with the conflict.
The Vietnam War started when French invaded Vietnamese territory and took it as their colony in 1887. Later in 1954, Vietnam was officially split into North(communist) and South(capitalist) Vietnam. The Viet Minh was the communist group who wanted to declare independence from France. The U.S did not want communism to be spread and that was the reason why they joined the war and supported the South. For the United States, a communist Vietnam meant the spread of the Soviet Union influence abroad the Asia’s territory (domino theory).
November 1, 1955 marked the beginning of the conflict in Vietnam. The Vietnam War was a fight against the Domino Theory, or the idea of the spreading of communism. Northern Vietnam was a communist territory, and the United States government feared that Southern Vietnam would soon become a communist state as well. In order to prevent this from happening, the US government drafted many young Americans to fight against Northern Vietnam. At first, many Americans supported the country’s involvement, though as time went on, many people became weary of the country’s involvement in the battle.
The 1960s was a decade that was successful but yet impacted the world in a negative way, but also led to many setbacks we still have going on today. The 1960’s was the height of the Vietnam War and a time when equality did not exist for all. There was the women's rights movement that was inspired by the Civil Rights Act. There were protests and movements for equality throughout the United States. Whether it was with women being treated unfairly or unequally or African Americans being called ‘animals’.
The Vietnam War was fought to stop the spread of communism that threatened the United States way of life. War strategies that were used were harsh, major battles bloody, and war opposition at home was high. The leaders of our countries decisions caused devastating effects that not only shook our country but the whole world. The United States had fought wars in the past to stop the spread of communism.

This made many people uncertain about what will happen next.
The Vietnam War was a conflict between North and South Korea that took place between November 1, 1955 and April 30, 1975, although the United States did not enter the war until March 8, 1965. The main reason that the United States entered the war was to ensure that the Communism did not spread in the region, fearing that Vietnam would be another North Korea. Although our entry into the war was not popular with the American people, it proved to have a major role in an allied victory. African American people were demonstrating for civil rights, women were demonstrating for equal rights and there was a protest against Vietnam war. In a way 1960s years marked the beginnings of several happenings on political and social front. As mentioned in “The Seventies” article on CNN “So much of what began in the 1960s only fully developed in the 1970s. The seeds may have been planted but they didn't truly begin to bear fruit until the subsequent decade.”

The United States became involved in the conflict in the early 1960s, under the pretext of containing communism and protecting South Vietnam from takeover by the North.
