In the novel “The Surrounded” by D’Arcy McNickle the author depicts the conflicts that many Native Americans went through when they were sent into the “white man’s world”. Native Americans were forced to attend boarding schools and taught to be “civilized” causing many to become alienated with their culture. McNickle shows the disconnection that Native Americans went through and felt between both worlds. They no longer fit in the Native American world and would never fit in with the rest of the world. While Europeans often times thought that they were saving Native Americans and teaching them the right ways to live reality was that assimilation and forced ideals led to the destruction of individuals.
"The Lost Children of Rockdale County" speaks about a syphilis outbreak in 1966 in an Atlanta suburb that affected over 200 teenagers and revealed their lives unknown to parents such as things like group sex, drinking, drugs and violence. Some of these individuals were as young as twelve and thirteen years old. Although the film begins with an inspection on how and why the syphilis outbreak happened, it becomes in the end a more deeper observation of the world of teenagers and their relationships within one another and with their parents. The film associates bold conversations with the parents of teens, along with interviews with community leaders and educators and with the medical professionals who investigated this syphilis outbreak.
The Native Americans and Euro-Americans settlers were more different than similar from one another. THESIS: Both the Native Americans and Euro-Americans have very different lifestyles, cultures, and dissimilar perspectives. Euro-Americans saw themselves as conquers of the civilized world and saw the Native Americans as “savages”. Both Euro-Americans and Native Americans had a different theory about the land; it created problems between the two.
In 1492, a Spaniard called Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean seeking the new world or the Indies and found modern day country Dominican Republic. When he got there the inhabitants, the Native Americans, spoke a different language and had a different culture. Columbus decided to call them “Indians” since he thought he had found India. When he got to know and understand the “Indians”, he started enslaving and using them to find gold and goods and steal them to take it to the Queen of Spain(nationalgeographic). Columbus told the King and Queen he had converted the natives to Catholicism so that they thought he was progressing in his trip and would donate more funds for more expeditions.
They see Native Americans as uncivilized people and very unstable, as they might attack the Whites at any times and act like barbarians. European Colonists and American Indians interacted in different ways that established a variety of relationships among the different cultures and people, varying region to region. In the colony of New England, the two main groups of people were the English Puritan settlers, who were primarily driven by religious duty, and the Pequot Tribe, who were one of the most powerful Native American tribes in that region. In 1620, just before the English arrived, a smallpox epidemic among various other diseases, devastated various Native American tribes located throughout New England, including the Wampanoag and Pequot tribes. This plague subsequently killed three fourths of the indigenous population located in the region of New England.

Soon after Columbus reported back to let all of Europe know that he successfully found land, European settlers quickly followed. Every tribe was one of it 's kind, yet their cultures shared the importance of their religious practices, beliefs, and values . The Native Americans were generally very peaceful people, that is, until the Europeans invaded their land and forced them to fight back.

However, due to the population increase in Europe, the European migrated to America in seek of land for farming, settlement, and spread their religion (Desai, n.p). The two communities lived together and interacted with each other.
“The significance of Native American boarding school was that Americans were trying to assimilate their culture and their way of living.” Many Native Americans today have very different opinions to how their people were placed in Indian boarding school. “Many Native Americans think that it helped their people be more civilized and help them live in american ways. ”While other Native Americans think that boarding schools were a place where they were torchered and a place where they lost their freedom and their culture. “Most people agree that Indian Boarding schools were just trying to help indians be more civilized, but others can see the wrong in the schools.”
The whites thought that the Indians were inferior and they “could not govern themself”(#4). In reality the Indians managed fine until the whites forced the Indians to go to boarding school which destroyed the reservation system. The Indians held democratic elections to elect the chief. The whites did not recognize the tribal systems and thought the Indians uncriticized. The whites wanted the Indians to adhere to a town government structure.
Introduction Today’s society consist of a variety of different cultures. Each cultures has their own identity, customs, and beliefs. In my community we have several strong, family oriented cultures.
Indian Boarding schools were created in the 1800s to “Kill the Indian, Save the Man.” They achieved this by transforming the natives looks, culture, language, and teaching them a certain way so they would be able to function in a “european society”. Indian boarding schools taught students both academic and “real world” skills, but they did so while ripping the indians from their culture. Most indian boarding schools were the same with their tactics in transforming the native man into a white one.
The Native Americans and white people never got along ever since the time the first pilgrims arrived. After losing many wars to the white men Native Americans soon became controlled by these white men to the point where their children were forced into boarding schools. The government stated that the schools would civilize the native children and fix what they called the indian problem. They saw Native Americans as if they weren’t also part of the human race, as if they were less. That wasn’t the worse part either in the boarding schools where the native american children attended they were mistreated and malnourished.
In the 16th Century, Spain became one of the European forces to reckon with. To expand even further globally, Spanish conquistadors were sent abroad to discover lands, riches, and North America and its civilizations. When the Spanish and Native American groups met one another, they judged each other, as they were both unfamiliar with the people that stood before them. The Native American and Spanish views and opinions of one another are more similar than different because when meeting and getting to know each other, neither the Spaniards nor the Native Americans saw the other group of people as human. Both groups of people thought of one another as barbaric monsters and were confused and amazed by each other’s cultures.
Upon the first colonial establishments, the Europeans viewed Native Americans as uncultured, unintelligent, and uncivilized. The first colonizers found themselves ultimately superior to the perceived rudimentary cultural and societal customs that were observed. Native Americans viewed Europeans as a strictly one sided cultural mass enforcement foreign establishment, stopping at nothing to enforce their perceived superiority in all forms of cultural and societal aspects. Differences in land use, gender roles, and societal history added to the wedging and hostility between the Native Americans and European people. Upon the European's first impression of Native American culture, the first notable aspect of their "species" and society was their promising outlook as potential slave laborers.
