1220 Words5 Pages

The two books we have read in class predict specific terrifying things about the future which makes you wonder if there are stories now that predict our future. Over the time we have spent in class, there have been 3 major focuses 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Social Dilemma. Many people enjoyed these stories their themes were interesting and felt very real. I think in the case of books they have gotten better with age because every day they come closer to our society. A social problem is a docudrama about life in society today, so the number of parallels these stories have is quite shocking and concerning. It makes you wonder how people so long ago were able to predict specific things about society today. If people had books about the warning …show more content…

In both books, we have read so far a common theme is that love is a result of free thought. “She was the first person in a good many years really I've liked” (Bradbury 68). This idea is something Montage thinks about Clarisse when he finally has someone he can talk freely with. Winston has a similar experience with Julia where when he can talk freely with he falls in love with her. A much more recognized theme between the two is the government preventing free thought. “In the end, the Party would announce that two and two made five, and you would have to believe it.”(Orwell 53). The banning of books in Fahrenheit 451 and the banning of thought to think in 1984 both tell a story about the government trying to ban people's ability to think freely. Another notable point is that in both stories there is a constant flow of pointless information keeping people's attention “Day and night the telescreens bruised your ears with statistics proving that people today had more food, more clothes, better houses, better recreations” (Orwell page). In social dilemma and Fahrenheit 451, people are addicted to technology. In one scene ban makes a bet to stay off his phone for a week and breaks this promise 3 days in. we also see this a lot in Fahrenheit through Mildred who is contrary listing the seashells or watching the family. A more depressing theme both have is that of suicide. “Montag knew if for the truth Beatty wanted to die”( Bradbury 116). Sadly both the world of Fahrenheit and our world prested through the social dilemma of the way the world has led many people to commit suicide. Lastly, a very prevalent theme in both stories is technology making us disconnect from society. “‘Doesn't everyone look nice’ ‘Nice.’ ‘You look fine, Millie!’ ‘FIne.’ ‘Everyone looks swell’”(Bradbury 67). Here we still Montag's wife is apathetic about having a conversation with him because of technology in the social dilemma we also see ben be disinterested in and family and the girl he likes because of technology. Although the stories are different they share many overarching themes, The book Fahrenheit 451 was able to predict a surprising amount about the 2020s
