Conversely, there is immense variation through which the two societies make use of the technological advancements they have available. In “1984”, it is more evidently used to oppress the public and maintain the Party’s power, whereas in “Brave New World” these powers are abused by the government in an attempt to become what they believe is more efficient, as confessed by Mustapha Mond to ‘the Savage’ towards the end of the novel. In order to deal with traditional problems, soma (a casual drug consumed almost daily by members of the New World) offers a way to deal with unpleasant emotions that lead to inefficiency and conflict. Focusing on the part relating to ‘nothing against the state’, it becomes apparent that in both novels, ‘the state’ wishes to prevent strong, arguably natural, inter-human relationships; whether it be for fear of inefficiency, or of possible anarchy due to shared frustration towards the system. Some critics argue that “Brave New World” is arguably the antithesis of “1984” in regards to relationships and the government’s involvement in them, as they have completely different purposes in their prevention. In the former, words such as ‘mother’ and ‘father’ are viewed as obscene; arguably, families create the strongest bonds and form individuals’ identities. Thus, to prevent unregulated variation influenced by exterior social units, the state has denigrated the concept of the family, channelling society’s loyalty, usually directed towards the family, towards the state, in order to maintain stability and a sense of community.
