In Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World the use of a soma, shapes a fully controlled utopian society. Soma controls the World State and the citizens of World State. It causes them to be promiscuous and believe that they have true freedom, even though they are slaves to their own minds. Soma is the “perfect drug” (Huxley), created to create the perfect, controlled society. The drug is distributed by the government and given to all the citizens of World State. Soma is highly valued and desired by almost everybody, it has no nasty side effects, unlike other drugs or alcohol. Soma is created to be the answer to all problems. Soma may be the “perfect” drug, but from an outside perspective it has created a chaotically controlled society. How could a drug possibly be the answer to controlling people? Well in reality it does not control the citizens it distracts them from the truth on what is going on around them. In Brave New World Promiscuity is not frowned upon,like it is in the real world, it is actually the opposite. Promiscuity is the law and having romantic or emotional attachment is illegal. Promiscuity being the law is just another way for the government to control the citizens. It is yet another distraction for what is really going on. Soma helps keep promiscuity alive. When the citizens are on soma their guard is down, they do not really realize what is going on. Without soma, the citizens would realize that something is not right. Sex is not used for procreation, it is only used for recreational purposes.
