Exploring the Dystopian Vision In a world where the government seeks to control every aspect of society, Aldous Huxley tackles controversial and problematic issues of individuality, morality, and freedom in his novel Brave New World. The novel takes place in a futuristic dystopian society where the government grants every citizen with instant access to dopamine or gratification whenever they please. Used as a symbol of escapism, Huxley symbolizes instant gratification with the help of soma. In small doses, soma makes the citizens of the novel feel pleasant, however, in large doses, it creates exhilarating hallucinations. As seen by Lenina after her horrendous time at the reservations, she gobbles a plentiful amount of soma to reduce the amount of stress she has endured (Huxley 140). Huxley describes soma in the novel as a drug to stay away from or they will become dependent on it. This indirectly tells the readers about how they too should stay away from soma or narcotics as a whole. Instant gratification can be detrimental as it can result in short-term pleasure at the expense of long-term objectives and a lack of long-term satisfaction. The new World State is implemented as a futuristic government in which they have total control over the population. Gone are the days of democracy and the government caring for its citizens. Instead, the World State views its citizens as numbers and statistics for their gain. Therefore the only way the government will intervene is if someone is out of line. One reason the government stepped in was when John generated a riot with the Deltas concerning soma (Huxley 210). The World State would also do the bare minimum for its citizens, such as awarding them soma rations throughout their lifetime.
