In Brave New World, Aldous Huxley uses the futuristic ideas of a dystopian society to predict the future of the world and it’s citizens. He illustrates his bold views on promiscuity, technology, consumerism, and drugs. The story is his idea of how society will change, if it’s people continue on the same path. Huxley’s views are being proven true each day in society, and continues to make his predictions a reality. Huxley’s take on promiscuity is accurate, and most evidently shown through the new boundaries and expectations in today’s relationships. Before the “lifelong” commitment knows as marriage, a prenup is more common than ever. Because of the high risk in a marriage not working, couples go into the relationship protected with their entities, and salaries kept to themselves. Right from the start, the doubt that the marriage is not going to last is already in the back of their minds. Financial stability has caused relationships to hold less weight over the emotional side rather than commitment. One of the majors causes behind a prenuptial agreement comes from kids. In fact, kids can also be a major deterrent to a relationship in general. Studies show that, “When the first baby arrives, 70 percent of couples experience drops in marital satisfaction, however, parents blame other factors instead, such as work, finances and the shortcomings of their spouses.” (Glembocki 1). Now the truth is coming out that even though it’s not the ideal reason to blame, other reasons for divorce are used as an excuse. In the World State, they are able to recognize the troubles that come with children. Even though kids are considered to be the greatest thing to ever happen to someone, the World State needs the stability that comes with having no kids. Kids completely change a relationship, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse, and that can’t be a risk in their society. The risk of an affair in any relationship is possible and can destroy even the strongest of marriages. Once again, the World State resorts to eliminating the possibility of such betrayal by taking the idea of a relationship away. But in today’s society, even though relationships are still very common, the act of cheating has become less frowned upon and forgiven much easier. It has become a common idea that, “Those who have affairs aren't necessarily unhappy with their partners” (Jayson 1). Some people have fully begun to believe that monogamy is not a real way to live, which makes their cheating acceptable. Even though the majority of people still believe monogamy is realistic, some are beginning to break out of those boundaries and the reaction is that cheating is much more common. It brings up the question: What is considered cheating? With all the technology, cheating can be defined as simply flirting online, to having lunch with a specific co-worker everyday. So, if there is no real line to cross has society totally lost the means of having a monogamous relationship? Huxley was able to recognize this and encouraged promiscuity to complete delete that boundary.
