Walter and Antigone's Pride/ Stubbornness, Boys
In both Antigone, and A Raisin in The Sun, the authors Sophocles and Hansberry explore the ways in which characters can react to situations with their pride and stubbornness being a factor. Walter and Antigone both share a sense of strong emotions when being put against others opinions. Walter decides to ignore Mama when told not to invest the money, this being due to his pride influencing him to take the money. Similarly, Antigone decides to ignore her sister when she advises her not to bury their brothers body. Ismene gives her advice to Antigone, saying that she should not bury their brothers body, but Antigone decides to ignore her and do what she believes in. As the leader and Creon both speak in rude, disrespectful ways towards Antigone she becomes relaxed and replies, “[a]h, [d]eath comes nearer with those words!” (Sophocles 373). Sophocles gives Antigone a stubborn, somewhat cocky attitude as her tone remains calm while speaking. Antigone’s tone does not change while she talks which employs that she is confident in what she is saying meaning her pride has high meanings and she didn’t care what they had said. As Ismene gives her advice to Antigone on whether or not she should bury their brother, Antigone disagrees with her sister's opinion and replies, “[h]e is my brother still, and yours;/ though you would have it otherwise,/ but I shall not abandon him” (Sophocles 345). Antigone decides to ignore her sisters advice, which she later reflects on when she is being sentenced by Creon, as she let her pride get the better of her by not listening to her sister. Due to her decisions, Antigone can be represented as a character who does not want to be proven wrong and doesn’t want to face the reality of others’ opinions.
