While Bnei Yisrael were in the desert they sinned many times, two sins that stood out the most were the sin of the Golden Calf and the sin of the spies. There are many similarities between the two sins. For example, both sins occurred after 40 days, it is as if after 40 days Bnei Yisrael give up and need a new leader. Additionally, Bnei Yisrael wanted a new leader who would do what they wanted; in both sins, they wanted to replace Moshe and Aaron. Lastly, Bnei Yisrael started to lose Emunat Hashem, they didn’t think God would help them if anything went wrong. Bnei Yisrael’s punishment for the sin of the Golden Calf was that Moshe had to make a new set of 10 commandments. Miriam was a very holy woman, and even she was punished for saying Lashon Harah about her brother. The spies should have learned from Miriam’s sin and not said Lashon Harah. During the sin of the Golden Calf, Bnei Yisrael didn’t know that God didn’t want them to pray to idols. A difference between these two sins is that right before these pasukim it talks about Miriam getting tzaraat. Rashi says that these texts are next to each other because now Bnei Yisrael should have known to not say Lashon Harah. During the sin of the Golden Calf, they didn’t know that Lashon Harah was so bad. Another difference is that during the sin of the spies the spies lied about what was in Canaan. Bnei Yisrael believes things that were not true. During the sin of the Golden Calf, Moshe went up Har Sinai to carve the 10 commandments. Moshe was up there for 40 days, but Bnei Yisrael thought he was up for longer than he said, so they wanted a new leader. They asked Aaron to make them a Golden Calf to worship and praise. When Moshe saw what was going on he and God were outraged. During this sin, Bnei Yisrael had not gotten all of God’s rules and they didn’t know what was the right thing to do.
