How I Live Now Daisy, your typical jaded teenage girl from the Big Apple, is departed to the English countryside on account of her wicked stepmother. Daisy is obligated to stay with Aunt Penn, her deceased mother’s sister, and her cousins: Osbert, Isaac, Edmond, and Piper. A few days later Aunt Penn has a business trip in which she has departure to another country. With no parental guidance the cousins create their own utopia and in this little paradise, the two cousins Daisy and Edmond strangely fall in love. Days pass and a fictional world war three outbreaks, causing borders to close. The females and males are forced into separation from each other as refugees, causing extreme distress for the lovers. Yet here’s the issue, the house is miles and miles away. These two are low on supplies and have no other choice than to eat wild berries and other natural food found on the journey home. There were no berries to be found and starvation was kicking in when Piper said field mushrooms were perfectly safe to eat. Having no choice left, the two munch on mushrooms mixed with salami. Hallucinations come along with the consumption of mushrooms, which the two experience. Piper starts screaming her lungs out, begging for the voices to stop.”I practically had to smother her to shut her up because I was so scared of someone hearing us” (Rosoff, 135). Because of the war, the two were sleeping in the woods, hitting rock bottom when they had to eat mushrooms leading to hallucinations. These hallucinations put Daisy in fear of being caught by the enemy and being murdered. Considering Piper’s age, the mushrooms affected worsley so Daisy was a tad bit more attentive. Neither mentioned the mushroom night again. Yet this was not the first time Daisy has gone insane. Each night Daisy claims that Edmond visited her. “During all this time I was in touch with Edmond. Strange as it sounds, he visited me” ( Rosoff, 89). According to her, he told her that he was back home waiting for her.
