Interests in math and science. Mr Hyde had developed a potion that allowed him to turn into Dr. Jekyll. Jekyll found a way to separate his good side from his darker side, by transforming himself into a monster free of consciences. But he later found that he was turning into more and more into Mr Hyde. He started turning into Mr. Hyde in random places, the transformations got worse and worse.
In February of 1943 Martin Dies presented a report from the Dies committee, listing William Pickens as a person of interest for “being a member or sponsor of certain organizations which are purported to be Un-American”(Pt.4 1). Pickens, an author, orator, educator, and civil rights leader, was interviewed later that year by special agents of the FBI. The FBI asks Pickens questions about several organizations he may have been involved with over his years. Picken’s responses range from defending his involvement, to completely denying involvement with certain organizations. His choice to pursue the money and put his family at risk mirrors that of another character in modern literature, Gollum. Originally named smeagol, this character obtains a magic ring by killing his own brother, eventually his greed for the ring turns him into a twisted, wretched creature. This new creature earns the name gollum by the incredibly barbaric sound he makes when he clears his throat. Gollum’s greed for the ring becomes his fatal flaw, as when the ring is thrown in to a volcano to be destroyed, he jumps in after it. Aiming to recapture the ring Gollum dies in the flames (Tolkien).
Jekyll and Hyde Good vs evil Stevenson presents the idea of duality through the differences between Dr Jekyll and mr Hyde. Throughout the novella, there is a repeated antithesis as the good of Jekyll is compared to the “detestabillity” of Hyde. Jekyll has a highly respectable front and is known for a having a good reputation, however Hyde is infamous he known for being evil and is strongly disliked by all he meets. Hyde is described as “like Satan” and “devilish” empathising his pure evil and his dangerous and deplourable nature. Whereas Jekyll is often described as a respected man and is “well built”.
Before he created Hyde, he was not able to satisfy most of his dark urges, which causes him unhappiness. There is a small imbalance of nature before, and that causes him to be curious about separating his nature to satisfy his dark apetite. Hyde helped him satisfy the bad urges without destroying his good appearance. But, Hyde’s evil power becomes extremely strong that it pulled all the joy out of being the good-natured Dr. Jekyll. When a person falls into any kind of slavery, they have no power to choose their fate.
Success was more important to him than his own life. He is showing that his love for science made him live a life on the edge. Some people are so passionate about something that they are willing to accept the good and the evil of their passion. Jekyll and all people struggle with good and evil in their lives. The novella The Strange Case of Dr.Jekyll and Mr.Hyde depicts this in several ways.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” because the story takes place in Victorian England we see that the characters have no room for expression of emotions or violence. Everything they do is secret, so the more Dr Jekyll is repressed, the more he wants to be Mr Hyde. The original characteristics of Henry Jekyll are reflected as “...life of effort, virtue, and control” (pg. 172) because, most of his life his vice activities were maintained a secret. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. It can be so confusing to try to explain why Dr. Jekyll felt so trapped, and why he felt that he had to separate himself into two separate personalities. Perhaps it was because of his youth, when he tasted the pleasures of sin for a short while. Maybe he even felt guilty because he wanted the evil side of life and longed to do whatever he pleased, even though it would cause pain and hurt to others. Dr. Jekyll thus separates himself into two people who share the feeling that they need to do whatever they want.
In the novella, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Henry Jekyll had the belief that there were two sides to everyone. One side being good. One side being evil. There is a purpose for the two coexisting.
This in itself is answered and directly bought up by Jekyll in the book, with the quote: I believe that this quote explains that Dr. Jekyll feels that although Hyde is pure evil, he knows that there is also an evil side to Jekyll – he allowed Hyde to exist, fully well knowing that Hyde would be dangerous. There are a number of differences and few similarities between the characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The differences between the two men are mental, physical and moral. They are two separate personalities. Dr. Jekyll is an extremely intelligent and sane man with many good friends, known for his kindness and affectionate nature. On the other hand, Mr. Hyde is less educated, detestable and a loner.
The description Jekyll portrays upon taking the potion is illustrated to the reader as if he is being re-birthed but into a whole new perception of life. Physically, he is in such a pain because his bones are grinding, horrendous spirits are among him, and he is overcome with nausea. When it subsides, he is self-aware of his new mentality of wickedness (Stevenson 1710). Hyde sees himself in a mirror as the smaller, less robust side of Jekyll, and this is probable due to the facts of evolution because Jekyll, as a public figure, practiced more good in the world, as to Hyde, who is now getting to release his evil (Ferrer-Medina). Hyde, having an aggressive instinct, no moral or social standards, takes pleasure in violence ultimately leading to his own destruction (Singh).
One of the major ideas presented in Jekyll and Hyde is the need for both good and evil to live in coexistence within an individual’s conscience.
