Why do people end their plans when something bad occurs? Imagine having to kill a friend, and bury all chances of breaking free from the life of the average migrant worker. Why can’t some people control their own actions? In the novella, Of Mice and Men by John Steinback, George and Lennie, two men, are on a quest to try and achieve their dreams. George and Lennie work on a ranch where they meet others with dreams. However, all the characters soon face the reality that their dreams are never going to come true. Of Mice and Men, takes place in Soledad California in the 1930s. The novella is about two young men named George and Lennie; they both have been together and struggled since they were younger. While they are working, there is a guy named Candy who wants to have his own ranch too. “S’pose I went in with you guys. Tha’s three hunderd an’ fifty bucks I’d put in. I ain’t much good, but I could cook and tend chickens and hoe the garden some. How’d that be?” pg (59). When Candy hears that George and Lennie have plans to do this, he tells George that he’ll pitch in money to own a ranch with them. The reason Candy wants to work along with them is because he is lonely and has nobody to communicate with. He had a dog that would be with him at all times, but his dog ended up getting killed by one of the guys that worked with him and thought his dog was too old. The dog was Candy’s only friend but since his dog got shot, he becomes more lonely than he was before. Candy’s mood lifts when George tells him that he can join them when they go to live on a ranch. He is very physically strong but is also mentally delayed forcing him to depend on George. George mentions their common dream about one day owning their own ranch, and growing their own vegetables. Lennie has a one track mind, usually disregarding Geroge and Candy’s dream to own their own place and only talking about himself and the rabbits.While George is out with the guys, Lennie goes into the barn to play with his dog and pets him. He was petting the dog too aggressively, and he ended up killing it. Lennie can’t control his own actions, and he doesn’t know how his actions can affect people/animals. Curley’s wife sits down beside him to talk to him about her life and Lennie begins to touch her hair. “She struggled violently under his hands.
