Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the many greats remembered and recognized in the movement for being an influential leader of his time. Having given over 2000 speeches, MLK(Martin Luther King) has one particular speech that stands out from the many and it is his “I Have A Dream” speech. MLK’s message being about peace, unity, fairness and freedom for and to all people shines through in this speech.
Lincoln’s “Emancipation Proclamation” and King’s “I Have a Dream” speech have many similarities and differences between them. The “Emancipation Proclamation” was written in 1862 and given on January 1, 1863. This famous document freed the all African-Americans from slavery. The “I Have a Dream” speech written and given in 1963 dealt with equality and the way people were treated. Both speeches were similar in that they were both positive speeches.

In order to appeal to his predominately African American audience, Martin Luther King, Jr. makes reference to Abraham Lincoln and his granting freedom to slaves by signing the Emancipation Proclamation.
On the other hand, these two speeches greatly differ from one another because of the way they shaped history. “I Have a Dream” was for the African American rights and freedom, whereas the “Inaugural Address” was about everyone coming together as one. King speaks of how african americans are not free after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.(3) With this phrase, it leads up to him saying repeatedly “I have a dream.” He was speaking to the african american eye in hopes that they would try to make a difference in their society.

When Dr. King delivered his speech he was demanding freedom and equality to be given to the African-American community in the United States. “Glory and Hope” was eradicated the apartheid had just ended in South Africa. He delivered his speech during his inauguration of presidency.
