At the start of ‘Macbeth’, Macbeth is presented as a valiant, noble character, but Shakespeare uses varied language to foreshadow his downfall.

Similarly, in ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’, Stevenson includes the downfall of his protagonist in his story by showing him as a prestigious gentleman at the start of the play, but near the end he is shown as the villainous Mr Hyde. In ‘Macbeth’ the protagonists downfall is somewhat caused by the Witches and Lady Macbeth whereas in ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ the protagonists downfall is due to his addiction to his potion. At the start of the play, Macbeth is shown as kind and brave due to his acts in the war. King Duncan says, “What he hath lost, noble Macbeth hath won”.

Henry Jekyll and Lanyon Hyde started off as colleagues and long time school companions. With not being in regular correspondence, Mr. Hyde took it as a surprise when he received a letter from Mr. Jekyll. Lanyon Hyde reads the letter and comes to the conclusion that Jekyll has a cerebral disease, a disease that causes a loss of oxygen to the brain, causing confusion and many other effects. First off, there is very little to go off of to determine if Mr. Jekyll is off his rocker or not. Even if he was, Henry Jekyll wrote wisely and carefully, making it hard to believe that he could be confused.
One final point to compare is how accurately the movies set the scene, especially since Stevenson emphasized how dark the streets of London were with descriptions like “sinister block” and “sordid negligence”. The 1920 version does well with keeping the frames of the streets of London dark and dreary, but the 1931 version hardly showed the streets at all and if they did, they seemed far too cheery and not as if something dark and verging on the supernatural was happening. A few other things that helped to set the scene or keep accuracy in both movies is that Jekyll looks into a mirror when he became Hyde, the cane is used to connect Jekyll with a murder, and Jekyll does instruct Poole to allow Hyde to come and go as he pleases. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are two completely different people. They are different, not just in physical appearance, but also in behaviors. Differences in characters are important especially if there are two main characters or two characters that are mentioned as much as these two are. So, this is not a surprise that these two characters are different in almost everyway. To start, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are different in physical appearance.
On October 29th, 2016, I watched Jekyll and Hyde at the Palm Canyon Theatre. In this play, Jekyll tries to convince the board to let him use his “cure” which should fix all of the bad people in the world. However, the board declines to allow him to use it. This causes him to test it out on himself; consequently, Hyde ends up being created. This causes Jekyll to not be heard from for a week, since he is dealing with two personalities.
There are a number of differences and few similarities between the characters of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The differences between the two men are mental, physical and moral. They are two separate personalities. Dr. Jekyll is an extremely intelligent and sane man with many good friends, known for his kindness and affectionate nature. On the other hand, Mr. Hyde is less educated, detestable and a loner.
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde consists of reputation, good vs evil and damage control. In other words, Utterson tirelessly works to prevent his best friend Dr. Jekyll from being dragged into the horrid affairs of Mr. Hyde, and Dr. Jekyll goes through the greatest of lengths to prevent his Hyde identity from being discovered, in order to avoid anyone knowing of his somewhat questionable scientific work and morally despicable behavior. Much of the novel is based on the characters ' reputations, how they have to maintain a good public image, as they are upper class people. The novel takes place in Victorian England and the main characters are all male members of upper class London.
Gabriel John Utterson, a lawyer, is on his weekly walk with his cousin, Richard Enfield. They reach a door leading into a rather large house, and Enfield tells Utterson of an encounter he had some months ago between a man and a young girl. The man, a sinister figure named Edward Hyde, and the young girl accidentally bump into one another, but Hyde proceeds to trample her. Enfield chases after Hyde and forces Hyde to pay £100 to avoid a scandal for his behaviour. Hyde leads them to this door, which he enters and re-emerges with £10 in gold and a cheque for the rest.
In the moment, I’d think that whatever I said and thought are my true feelings in the situation, and not realize that maybe it is not the best time to be making decisions. I have always hated how difficult it is for me to form rational thoughts when I’m in such bad moods, but it’s also difficult for me to back off and compose myself when I begin to say things I don’t mean. Unlike Jekyll, I have never desired to become my Hyde side. In the novel, the text reads “If each, I told myself, could be but housed in separate identities, life would be relieved of all that was unbearable; The unjust might go his way, delivered from the aspirations and remorse of his more upright twin; And the just could walk steadfastly and securely on his upward path, doing the good things in which he found his pleasure, and no longer exposed to disgrace and penitence by the hand of this extraneous evil” (43). Jekyll has the desire to split his soul into a “good” and a “bad” side, in order for him to experience the dangerous thrills in life while also guaranteeing that he will still be able to go to heaven because of his remaining good side.
Jekyll and Frankenstein bring out monsters that cause catastrophe in their own worlds. Both Dr Jekyll and Frankenstein explore the catastrophic results of overreaching. Shelly portrays the effects a negative environment can have on The Monster whilst Stevenson sates all humans must endure the battle of duality between good and evil. Jekyll and Victor’s intentions are well intended but are lost into the abyss of their prior motivations. The Monster proved that he had compassion whereas Hyde demonstrated pure evil.
You see that when Hyde starts to gain more power and authority in Jekyll’s life. In conclusion I think duality of man is more than good vs evil, but it is really simple as well. Duality of man encompasses any opposing identities in one man. Whether it be good or evil; healthy or unhealthy; hardworking or lazy. It doesn’t matter as long as there is a manifestation of two opposing identities or states of mind; then that qualifies as dual nature.
