The novels "Medicine Bag" by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, "A Celebration of Grandfathers'' by Rudolfo Anaya, and "Abuela Invents the Zero." by the author Judith Ortiz Cofer are all similar in their respective ways, the author's intention in these stories is to create a visualization of a relationship between a teenager and a grandfather. Throughout these stories, there are diverse interactions that evaluate the teenager's opinions on the grandfather, likewise with the grandfather; his demeanor is changed ever so slightly as the teenager changes. The relationship varies from book to book, for example, in "Medicine Bag'' the wide-eyed grandchild's relationship with his grandfather is to be described as uneasy. The grandchild Martin is to be unexpectedly met by his Native-American grandfather. The unplanned circumstances irritate him, as Martin believes his popularity and social status have been depleted by the presence of his grandfather, and in some way he is ashamed. Although the grandchild is firstly embarrassed by the elder’s unfamiliar practices and beliefs, he eventually accepts his grandfather via an ancestral Medicine Bag, hence the story's title. In the story, Rudolfo explains the cultural significance of showing respect to those of age. Rudolfo sees his elders as figures with deep knowledge, he explains that as he lived with them he learned a wise path of life to follow. Rudolfo also explains the significance of the elders, he defines the elder's bonds as an importance that keeps all animate and inanimate life connected. Compared to Martin's unsure-like sentiment toward his grandfather, Rudolfo understands the solemn implications of elders from the start on the other hand Martin was to be influenced to understand the elder's
