The end of the Elizabethan era was over 400 years ago. I tend to think of that as a very long time ago, but when I sit here and put together the facts I realize that although there are differences, there are many similarities. The Elizabethan era is the time in which Queen Elizabeth I reigned, from 1558–1603. Some things to look at are healthcare, education, and even fashion. Although modern times and Elizabethan times are over 400 years apart, we have many of the same principles on some important things in our societies. In Elizabethan times medicine was not very advanced. While they had some medicines for some things, the medicines were generally herbs and usually not definite cures. Even a common cold could kill you. They did have physicians in this time period and these physicians would have received education and training. They also had apothecaries which could distribute what medicine they did have. The barbers not only trimmed hair, but they were part of the medical field too, and they could perform blood-letting and tooth-pulling. In modern times, we have a vast array of medicine at our disposal. We’ve cured many known diseases and we’re constantly researching new drugs. We can go see our doctors who spent many years being educated, and we can get a prescription from them. It’s no problem for us to run to the pharmacy and pick up our prescriptions. However, we probably won’t be running to the barber to have our teeth pulled! While we do have a lot of differences between the Elizabethan era and modern times, we clearly have many similarities to some of the basic things in life. We all place a certain amount of importance on fashion, education, and healthcare.
