Ancient Rome and Athens were two of the most major civilizations in the history of Western civilizations. Both civilizations were known for their important contributions to the arts, sciences, and politics. However, when it comes to citizenship, it can be argued that Ancient Rome had a better system than Ancient Athens. First, it's crucial to understand what citizenship meant to both civilizations. In Athens, only men who were born in Athens and had Athenian parents were considered citizens. This meant that foreigners and women were ultimately not granted citizenship. Meanwhile, in Ancient Rome citizenship was much more inclusive. People born outside of Rome were granted citizenship, once they served in the military. This allowed for a more …show more content…

Citizens were automatically able to vote and have a role in politics. In Athens, citizenship did not come with the same advantages and rights. Only a small amount of the population was able to be involved in the politics of Athens, and both women and slaves were granted no legal rights. All these inequalities truly made it difficult for Athens to be a truly democratic city. Additionally, the Roman government was much more stable than the Athenian government. Athens had a democratic government that frequently changed its leadership. This made it difficult for them to create long-term laws and policies. In the meantime, Rome had a more stable government that allowed them to create long-term policies and laws, which were beneficial and made the citizens happy. The stability of the Roman government also allowed for a more effective government, which helped Rome become a much more powerful civilization in the ancient world.
While in terms of infrastructure, Rome was also more evolved than Athens. The Romans had a road network that connected all parts of the city, which made trading and traveling much easier. Rome had a more advanced system of aqueducts that provided water to the city, which made growth and development available to the city. It allowed for a better quality of
