True friendship is all about being able to count on each other like one, two, three. When we factor this in, I strongly believe that Benvolio was a better friend than Mercutio to Romeo in Shakespeare's Play Romeo and Juliet.
Benvolio was consistently a better friend than Mercutio, and as Bruno Mars says, “If you ever find yourself lost in the dark and you can't see, I'll be the light to guide you”. Benvolio always guided Romeo in the right direction and listened to him, providing advice and comfort, whilst Mercutio was all about himself. After Romeo took revenge on Tybalt for killing Mercutio by killing him, Benvolio warned him to leave town. So that the prince didn’t kill Romeo; he said to Romeo "Romeo, away, be gone…The prince will doom thee death," (Act 3, Scene 1, Line 128-130) Benvolio was trying to save his friend's life and even in the grief and confusion of the two deaths he still looked out for his

When Romeo was lovesick for Rosaline and upset that she ended things with him, all he needed was a good friend by his side. While Mercutio was teasing Romeo about his feelings and having no sympathy for him at all, Benvolio was consoling Romeo and saying to him; "One fire burns out another's burning, one pain is lessened by another's anguish," (Act 1, Scene 2, Lines 45-46) This quote is Benvolio telling Romeo that another pain will distract him and so he should go to the Capulets party and have fun. This advice proves to be very useful, as when he gets to the party and sees Juliet, he instantaneously forgets about Rosaline. When you're upset, you really don't want a friend who is teasing you, but a friend with advice and someone who you “Can count on you like four, three, two, and you’ll be there.” Benvolio is a wise and supportive friend who shows his commitment to Romeo through being someone who Romeo can count on through the high and lows of
