Poetry can be used as an effective tool to communicate to the audience various human experiences, particularly migration. Through poetry it is able to capture the personal impacts and trials migrants faced which is accompanied by emotions varying from positive to negative. Two poets, particularly Peter Skrzynecki and Antigone Kefala, are able to cleverly convey their migrant experiences in their poems. This is represented in ‘Migrant Hostel Parkes-1951’ by Peter Skrzynecki and ‘Family Life’ by Antigone Kefala which both articulates the alienation and search for belonging of the migrant experiences respectively. By utilising a range of poetic techniques, the poets are able to extend beyond their writing and immerse the reader into their poem. ‘Family Life’ by Kefala is a strong attempt to put the reader in the perspective of the speaker and how they perceived the world in a time where migrants and locals were segregated by prejudice. The poem captures the moments when Kefala, who herself is the persona, is forced to associate with new this new society evoking a sense of disconnection and distress. Kefala utilises a range of techniques in the poem to reinforce her messages. The effective use of high modality shows the certainty of Kefala’s words. The line ‘Waiting for an acceptance that never comes’ asserts the fact that she will never be accepted into this community. In the second line of the second stanza, it states ‘...young men made of forevers’ which is a metaphor that suggests the locals of the land can expect a full and carefree life.
