Salinger, the authors of these titles, respectively, fashion flawed Jay Gatsby and Holden Caulfield, with one important desire: the longing to gain what they can’t have; acceptance and the feeling of belonging. Authors of classic American literature often utilize a character’s development to establish a worldview or opinion. In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Great Gatsby, Mark Twain and F. Scott Fitzgerald use their narrators, Huck Finn and Nick Carraway, to suggest an argument about American society. Seeking adventure, both characters embark on a journey, but their encounters with society leave them appalled. While they each have personal motives for abandoning their past, both end up interacting with different cultures that lead them to a similar decision about society and their futures. Ultimately, they stray from the dominant culture in order to escape the influence of society.

Gatsby tells Jordan Baker to ask a favor of him that gets him involved in the plot. This favor is “ If you'll invite Daisy to your house some afternoon and then let him come over”(Fitzgerald 76). People manipulated others, while others couldn’t accept the truth. Restrictions to Achieving the American Dream During 1920’s and early 1930 Americans dreamt of obtaining a world or place that they could peacefully spend the the rest of their lives in without any worries and that would benefit their future; however, societies standards restricted typical Americans from reaching that dream. Enemies are portrayed as being opposites of each other and work to repel the other like magnets. When one thinks of enemies, they may think of Batman and the Joker. One works to preserve the well being in Gotham and tries to prove that it has good people living in it. The Joker on the other hand works to upset the established power and expose their corruption to the public through heinous crimes. Such is not the case in The Great Gatsby.
