For starters, the poem, A Controlled Society, connects to the short story The Lottery due to their similar theme of a controlled society. Firstly, one connection within both stories deals inside the line, “we are insects, a part of the game. agree to our law of destruction and pain” (Adams, line 4-7). By comparison, in this line the poem is talking about how the people of their town are being controlled by the government's corrupt system. As well, they symbolize this corruption through the second line, describing how these powerful organizations are making destructive laws that are causing people pain instead of helping. Warner's regulations without question during the lottery and those who speak up are silenced. In addition, Old man Warner plays the role of someone who is an ideal follower of this tradition, showing the villagers how to behave towards this system. Showing them to not be the fool and resorting to those so-called young folks of the other towns that are changing this tradition by removing the lottery. Which is a great example of a controlled society and how easily people are fooled by the government. Secondly, another connection between these two pieces of literature is through the line, “it’s just too bad that the people are asleep”. You’ve made them zombies, they’re too deep” (Adam, 13-14). In this case, in the first line it is symbolizing people not realizing the reality of a controlled government system. Evidently, by the words asleep, they are referring to the people lacking the sensation of seeing beyond the government and being caught in a daze of their words. Furthermore, the poem refers to people as zombies, which in this case means that they follow higher authority with no understanding of their choices but simply going along with them.
