No Hug too Big By Diya Gattu In literature, authors tend to write about friendship. In the book Tiny T. Rex and the Impossible Hug by Jonathan Stutzman, the protagonist Tiny is a good friend. I see this when Tiny is polite, when Tiny is empathetic, and most of all, when Tiny is caring. In the text, Tiny is a good friend when he is polite. In the beginning, when Pointy is feeling down, Tiny says, ‘“Hello, Pointy. Are you OK?”’ The thought of even asking if Pointy is ok shows what a good friend he is. Also, how did Tiny know that Pointy was sad? He probably knew from being friends for such a long time. He kindly and politely asks for advice. He says, ‘“Hello, Aunty Junip! I have a problem. I must learn how to hug, but my arms are too tiny.”’ When he is polite, everyone is friendly to him (Golden Rule). Also, he rejects his father, aunt, and mother’s advice. Tiny shows this through being empathetic. When his father gives him advice, Tiny thinks, “Pointy does not like math. Math will only make Pointy feel worse,” he is thinking about what Pointy would prefer rather than himself. Maybe Tiny loved math, but all he wanted was for Pointy to be happy. With determination, Tiny exclaims, “Pointy needs me.” Tiny feels how sad Pointy is (feeling empathy) and feels from his perspective instead of his own. His empathy shows through here because he could be doing so many other things but believes that the most important thing is to make Pointy happy.
