In chapter 11 of To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and Courage by Edgar Albert Guest have numerous similarities. The points of similarities diction and theme were created for several reasons. Similarities between the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird and the text Courage are illustrated through negative tone by diction. The novel states, “She was vicious. Once she heard Jem refer to our father as Atticus and her reaction was apoplectic”(Harper Lee 133). Through the use of “apoplectic” and “vicious”, the author used negative connotation which depicts a negative tone. This is similar to Courage because they both show a pessimistic tone. In to Kill a Mockingbird the theme of never giving up. The novel states,” I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you you’re licked before you begin but you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what, you rarely win but sometimes you do” (149). This quote signifies how Atticus is teaching his children to never give up. The two literary pieces share this commonalty because they both mention not giving up regardless of what the outcome is. In Courage, the theme of never giving up is also depicted. The poem states, “At some future time when he’s apt to fall; if he hasn’t it now, he will have it not When the strain is great and pace is hot. For who would strive for a distant goal must always have courage within his soul” ( 13-17).
