Do you you think there would still be racism in our country if no one fought against it? In the book To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Lee tackles this question and tries to show the impact the courage people had to speak up about their beliefs had on racism in our country. The story revolves around a controversial trial where a white woman says a black man raped her, but the evidence says otherwise. A lawyer, named Atticus Finch, has the courage to defend the black man even though the very racist town of Maycomb will hate him for it. Courage is shown a lot in this story in other ways, specifically through an old woman named Mrs. Dubose who’s addicted to morphine, and a recluse named Boo Radley who’s never left his house for years that saves Atticus’s children when the father of the white woman attacks them in the woods. Lee shows courage through Atticus, Mrs. Dubose, and Boo Radley. Courage is shown through Atticus Finch when he decides he’s going to defend Tom Robinson in the trial. Tom was a black man who everyone knew was correct in the trial, but most people in Maycomb were racist and thought he should go to jail. He hadn’t left his house in years and hadn’t been seen either, but he left his house to save Scout and Jem armed with a only a kitchen knife and killed Bob Ewell. It took a lot of courage for Boo to attack Bob in the woods because he rarely left his house, people hadn’t seen him in years, and he was very shy. He knew that there was a good chance that he wouldn’t be able to stop Bob, and that he would probably have to be seen by many people and talk in front of them at court. He showed courage because he was scared and shy, but he knew that the children weren’t going to be safe unless he killed Bob
