It can be done through media, rumors or just information that has been fed to people. Society influenced Victoria and Ruby as victims to be accusers and even shaped a fictional character, Mayella, to be both a victim and an accuser as well.
Mayella Ewell, from To Kill a Mockingbird, and Ruby Bates were both victims of society, which they were rejected by when they wanted to be accepted. They were victims of manipulation from society to protect themselves from such. She was manipulated by society and Victoria to accuse the Scottsboro boys. Ruby lived in a black neighborhood and played with the black kids as she grew up, like her siblings did. She knew that they were just human beings like she was, but that’s also why she and her family were shunned. Ruby knew the truth and still accused the young boys of rape, though it didn’t happen; Victoria rather pushed her to accuse them. She later tried to tell the truth, but it was too late since the trials had already gone through and Ruby had already accused them. Not only did Victoria influence Ruby’s accusation, society also fueled the accusation. Ruby was described as quiet, which may have allowed her to be easily influenced, but their family was looked down upon by social workers and others in the town. This differs from Mayella and Victoria, since Mayella and Victoria accused the boys for explanations to the town and so that they felt safe from being granted down casted looks for more reasons.
