In evaluating Animal Farm it uses all three forms of persuasion. Pathos is the appeal to emotions, ethos is the appeal to credibility and logos is the appeal to logic. A chief example of pathos in this novella is Boxer who supported the dream of Animalism and gets sent to the slaughterhouse in exchange for whiskey. Orwell accomplishes ethos by making the book believable in the scene of some humans manipulate and deceive others, so we can believe the pigs would perform the same way. Orwell introduces logos in Animal Farm with every speech the pigs produce as they use logic behind their ideas of Animalism.
In George Orwell's Animal Farm, Old Major, a prize-winning white boar, summons all the animals at Manor Farm to the stable to make a speech. In his speech he wanted to convey a message to the other animals, explaining the cruelty of humanity, how they really are, based on his twelve-year experience. Proposing to make a Rebellion to confront humans for so much evil that they have done to animals. In his speech he uses rhetoric, Ethos and Pathos. He is known to use Ethos, as his speech is based on his years of experience, which he had on the farm.
6. No animal shall kill any other animal. 7. All animals are equal” (Doc A excerpt 1, Animal Farm Chapters 2-3). Snowball narrowed the commandments down to“four legs good, two legs bad”, which means that all of the animals are equal and friends, and all of the humans are enemies to the animals.
Rebelling is to escape from people and their cruel ways, but can the animals escape the deathly reign of their own kind? The foundations of society and how we all relate to one another, are rooted in the capital and the exchange of capital. This premise manifests itself most prominently in the way the pigs take over and become capitalists, as they wished to have a communist society, mirroring the way of the Russian Revolution in the early 1900’s. George Orwell, author of the political allegory Animal Farm, experienced malfeasance first hand in the Spanish Civil War. Power and corruption is displayed by the pigs appeal to basic needs and desires such as, taking the milk and apples to improve their well being, the use of ethos and pathos to persuade the animals to work blithely, and the opportunistic ways of Napoleon.
There was nothing there now except a single Commandment it ran: ‘All Animals Are Equal But Some Animals Are More equal Than Others” (Orwell 134). The commandments are changed and Benjamin notices that this Commandment is different. He acknowledges that the pigs changed the rule for the pigs sake and not for the animals sake. In the beginning of the quote it states that benjamin breaks his rule of reading and adding his input about the Commandments because he truly knows this commandment by heart because it was the most related one to him. Including that Benjamin remembers Old Major speech of a world of equality and not of inequality.
How Hypocrisy and Lies Play a Major Role in the Leadership of the Pigs Lies and hypocrisy can play a major role in a person or group’s leadership. In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, animals on a farm are unhappy with their life, so they rebel and take over their farm for themselves.. In the beginning of the book the white boar on the farm which everyone calls Old Major has had a dream where man has gone from the Earth and all is peaceful. He also sings a song called Beast of England. It talks of a time when man will be overthrown from the Earth and animals will rein the Earth and there will be no more hunger and no more cruel punishment for any animals.
The satire present here is that the altering of the ten commandments effectively portray how the absurd the concept is. There is no way that animals could become, “more equal” than others. In the beginning of the novel, Old Major expressed that the animals shall overcome their oppressors, but the pigs become the oppressors. Through their chants and the ten commandments, the citizens are brainwashed to believe that everything is just and fair because when the commandments and chants were first written or said, everyone was in agreement, and believed it was fair. The pigs start to alter the propaganda, and the animals still believe that it is fair, when in reality it is not.
Alex: once upon a time a very poor woodcutter lived in a tiny cottage in the forest with his two useless children, Handsome and Regretel. His third wife hated the children and was forever nagging the woodcutter. (Ayush and Adam enter stage left) Ayush: there is not enough food in this house for us all. There are too many mouths to feed!
Animal Farm: Authority, Power, Propaganda “It is not wisdom but authority that makes a low.” Thomas Hobbes’ quote reveals that the world is all about authority and how powerful people are. In other words, to be able to rule, wisdom is not essential. However, authority is crucial. This quote relates to George Orwell’s Animal Farm as it represents the theme of power by the pigs that use propaganda, intimidation and false informations to take over the farm and to control the animals.
George Orwell’s Animal Farm demonstrates that humans with out proper authority or government to rule over them, everything collapses. George Orwell himself was a humanist and believed in no God but rather that humans could exist themselves in some sort of perfect utopia. However, major world event happening at the time of publishing for this book suggested otherwise. The discovery of Hitler’s concentration camps and attempted genocide proved, very much so, that humans left to themselves can be horrible, twisted up being. From a Christian perspective, human nature is sinful and, with no God, can not live in harmony.
Based on the action the animals have taken it is quite clear that they have rebelled against Mr. Jones and his alliances. Although the animals rebelled against the human race because Old Major convinced them that the humans are responsible for their suffering and labor on animal farm, the animals still have to endure labor in order for animal farm to stay on it foundations and remain viable. Also, because the humans surround the animals it might be hard for them to fortify themselves to continue following Old Major’s guidance before he died. Although the animals wanted to get rid of the human race, the animals themselves are perpetrating actions and a mentality that a human would follow. By the animals having a mentality of rebellion it is
1) The Seven Commandments was propaganda for animalism, which was based on equality and not being humanlike in any way. First, No animal shall wear clothes. This is because by the time the pigs adopt clothes they are so powerful, and the other animals are so fearful, that it is unnecessary; second, whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. Because once they have achieved victory, animals must not emulate Man.
The role of religion in “Animal Farm” was to maintain hope, organization/balance and the practice of beliefs/rituals. Religion can be perceived in many ways throughout the story, and is also plays a key role in the characters actions and thoughts. The first set of beliefs that was presented to the animals were “The Seven Commandments” (Orwell 43). Like The Ten Commandments in the Christian religion, here established by Napoleon and Snowball from Old Major’s speech. “They will form an unalterable law by which all the animals on Animal Farm must for ever after”, stated by them (Orwell 42).
My Seven Commandments As I was reading Animal Farm in class. There was a part in the book in which the animals wrote there Seven Commandments. As I was reading that part I thought to myself “How cool would it be if I were to make my own commandments!” Luckily my teacher, Ms. Zamora, gave us an assignments to do exactly that. I hope you enjoy my very own commandments.
The tremendous book “Animal Farm” is showing how Squealer (the media) is corrupting all animals to think that what they're doing and how they are changing the 7 commandments is the right way. As the animals see how they’re changing everything they don’t try to do anything to stop, they’re too dumb and have no knowledge to realize that they are being used. Napoleon has the power, but got carried away with the power and was doing awful choices with the animals even if it stated that all animals are friends, having power could be good, but take it as if you have brownie, you eat multiple brownie’s and get tired of it such as getting carried away with power. “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” quotes like this
