To begin, Irony in the form of dark humor is used to convey a postmodern concept in the movie “Stranger than Fiction”, and the short story “The Happy Man”. Ironically, in “Stranger than Fiction” the perspective of a narrator and character are reversed. Characters in a novel are commonly oblivious of their narrative. However, Harold Crick is conscious that someone is narrating his life; therefore, he takes certain steps to avert his unfolding fate. On the contrary, narrators are generally omniscient, but Kay Eiffel, the novelist, is entirely unaware of her creation’s realism.
In the short stories “Identities” by W.D. Valgardson and “Sentry” by Fredric Brown, situational irony is used to reveal a theme of assumptions. Valgardson’s use of irony in his short story, “Identities” illustrates how people are quick to judge. The protagonist assumes dressing similar to the gang members would ensure his safety, however, ironically, “the police were trained to see an unshaved man in blue jeans as a potential criminal” (Valgardson, 13). The irony reveals the negative effects of prejudgment made by the protagonist and the officer, which leads to the death of the central character. The short story, “Sentry” by Fredric Brown also uses situational irony to acknowledge the fact that assumptions are always made.
The second most used type of irony used to relate to Jim Nightshade is situational irony. This type of irony is seen when it says “The boys stood alone among the encampments.” (Bradbury71), “so vanished the real army of people.” (71), and “warm food in bright rooms.” (71).
Irony is present in everyday life. It has become the crux of thousands of jokes, remarks and even the media. Thousands of stories include irony in them in the form of ironic twists, characters, and plotlines. The irony in stories is often sidelined or overlooked; however, it can be so much more. In “The Veldt”, it is, in fact, a large part of the story.

Such examples portray the use of irony in many instances. Irony is a very powerful tool that can occur in everyday situations to the twisting and turning of plots in literature.
O.Henry provides a comical effect when using situational irony in his short story, “The Ransom of Red chief”. In contrast, Guy de Maupassant’s use of situational irony in “The Necklace” elicits a sense of pity or grief towards the protagonist. Emotions, as well as actions respond to other forms of sentiment. For instance, the sense of surprise may lead to anger, or perhaps gratitude. Thus, surprise does kindle to other emotion, yet it is also an emotion itself.
A type of situational irony used in The Ransom of Redchief and Home Alone is the kids are smarter than the kidnappers and robbers but you would expect the robbers and kidnappers to be smarter. This illustrates that the kids outsmarted the robbers and kidnappers when you would expect the robbers and kidnappers to be smarter than the kids. There is dramatic irony used in both The Ransom of Redchief and Home Alone. An example from the story is that we knew the kid was going to get kidnapped but Johnny didn 't know.
