In “Rough Justice: A Caning in Singapore Stirs Up a Fierce Debate about Crime and Punishment” by Alejandro Reyes, the author uses statistics, logic, and facts to build his argument supporting Singapore’s justice system that focuses on “a sense of personal responsibility” (Reyes 182). This statement still holds true in today's society. Many people see the ownership and distribution of property as a separation in class. The common translation between property and wealth is that one must have a certain amount of monetary value in order to purchase property, therefore, many view property and those who own property as wealthy. Another principle that is largely seen in today’s society is the system of checks and balances on government power.
According to Charles Wheelan, the reason that some people are richer than others is due to human capital. Human capital is defined by Wheelan as “the sum total of skills embodied within an individual.” These skills can include “education, intelligence, charisma, creativity, work experience” and more. Wheelan states that there is a greater need for people with specialized training and skills rather than jobs, such as fast food employees, that do not require a large skill set. These specialized jobs earn more money due to the “significant investments in human capital” that a person would need to make while acquiring these skills.
Brian Roberson, 13 years old, the main character of the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, is forced to mature and act as an adult after he founds himself alone in the middle of nowhere. At the beginning of the novel, Brian is flying in a small plane to the oil fields of Canada to visit his father. While he is in the plane he is frustrated because of his parents’ recent divorce. The divorce and a secret are keeping him unhappy; everything he cares and thinks about is this. After the pilot of the plane, the only other person in the plane, has had a heart attack, Brian is unable to act.

Each different country has a different culture, in which, a lot of aspects can be a like and can be different. An abundance amount of people can take the american culture for granted. Robin Williams identifies the ten core values that make up the U.S society in the american culture and those factors being-Achievement and success, Individualism, Hard work, Efficiency and practicality, Science and technology, Material comfort, Freedom, Democracy, Equality, and Group Superiority.
Our founding fathers based our nation upon certain core values. These values prompted men to take up arms to not obtain but defend them as well requiring some to make the ultimate sacrifice. These core values are liberty, individualism, equality and self-government. The pilgrims, the earliest settlers, came to this continent to pursue religious liberty since they were persecuted by government officials.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Being American to me means the ability to pursue happiness, an education, an income, and any of my dreams. Being able to live in a country that you can do anything that you set your mind to do and not having a dictator ruling the citizens. By being apart of this nation you are fortunate enough to have and make your own choices in life. Two main symbols that most people can immediately name when they think of the U.S. is the bald eagle and the American flag.
American 's gained their independence because of a decision by its ' colonial citizens to pursue freedom through the legitimate use of armed force. Disparate American colonies fought on a unified front for a set of defining values and principles centered on their customs, traditions, and desired institutions. Americans ultimately prevailed because of a deep shared sense of patriotism and nationalism. American 's declared their independence from Britain 's control based on the defining principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. These values and principles have endured and transcended since 1776 through multiple wars which have challenged American values, principles, and institutions.
Values, as defined by James M. Henslin in Essentials of Sociology: A Down-to-Earth Approach are "the standards by which people define what is desirable or undesirable, good or bad, beautiful or ugly." (p. 49) Depending on where one lives, his or her values can vary a great deal. Not every country has the same values. Henslin defined norms as "expectations of 'right' behavior."
Throughout this paper you will read about these three topics, marriage, general roles, and sexual orientation. Overtime, society values and norms have been evolved. Things through the early 1900s until now have changed. People now at a really young age live with their partner before getting married because some are afraid to take the big step off getting married. For example young teenagers attempt to live with their girlfriend or boyfriend at a young age before marriage.
Core values of a person are characteristics that define that person. Everyone should know obviously what are our core values and why they have it. The values of a person are shaped throughout his life and suffer external influences from family, friends, instructors and the society in which that individual grow. As Gandhi once stated: “Your beliefs become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.” My five most important personal core values are honesty, integrity, fairness, compassion and loyalty.

There are things money cannot buy that could consider being wealthy as long as I have my family, to be healthy, and to be happy. As life begins and love never ends, family is the number one aspect of being wealthy. I do not need a lot of money to have a rich life. Even though I may not have all the material things I ever wanted, my loving family are worth the load in gold.
