Americans sometimes have conflicting values. A persistent debate centers the individual and society. Individuals create and shape the society around them. They intertwine and depend upon each other. Much like yin and yang, they create balance and affect each other yet this interdependence also leads to conflict.
Our founding fathers based our nation upon certain core values. These values prompted men to take up arms to not obtain but defend them as well requiring some to make the ultimate sacrifice. These core values are liberty, individualism, equality and self-government. The pilgrims, the earliest settlers, came to this continent to pursue religious liberty since they were persecuted by government officials.
American culture includes the customs and traditions of the United States. It not just one thing it is such a broad aspect. "Culture encompasses religion, what we wear, what we believe is right or wrong, how we behave with loved ones, and a million other things. " American society back then a long time ago, however, was based off social classes and hierarchical positions.
Though philosophy has had a great influence on American culture, and has shaped the national character of American people. Being an American means defending your own rights to freedom of speech and to be free to be who you want to be. By being who you want to be means having the right to choose your own religion. It means that you are proud of your country to have its values of freedom to life, speech and liberty. You have the right to have your own ideas and beliefs and you are able to express them knowing that you have that kind of freedom. It means that you have the freedom to make your own choices in life even if it is to be successful or not you have the freedom of that choice and the freedom to life.

When I first settled in the United States, I had troubles in adopting its culture. This is because both cultures describe values differently. Values are collective ideas about what is right and wrong, and what is good and bad in particular culture . It sometimes gives people the criteria to evaluate people, objects, and event. Moreover, Americans tend to value individualism positively because they think individuals are encouraged to perform well throughout their life.
The two important values that I have learnt are the independence and the respect. I learnt these two values since my childhood. One of the values is the independence. Independence means that you can support yourself without owning or depending on yourself concerned with livelihood or studying. You can make decision of your life without being controlled by the others.
