In the book Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins we travel down the path of enlightenment with the many beautiful characters the author paints for us and a story that brings new ideas. Within the seven veils Robbins teaches us about history, and humanity itself. The book is oddly formatted though differently than many books by breaking the chapters up into the Veils instead of chapters. The author bases these lessons and chapters off of the Dance of the Seven Veils. Using uniquely painted characters and a well-illustrated story we can begin to unveil the truth and find enlightenment. In the beginning of the book we are introduced to newlyweds Ellen Cherry and Randolph “Boomer” Petway. ” Much like myself we see Ellen being forced by her family to not pursue her dream of being an artist, leaving her to flee to Chicago. The author then takes a strange turn in the story introducing us to some odd and inanimate character. Strangely they are a dirty sock, an ancient painted conch shell, a sticksilver spoon and a can of pork and beans. With this random bunch of objects we begin to learn history that the author is trying to convey. The story continues with the tale of this couple and how with its demise Cherry becomes a part of history. When Boomer and Cherry breakup, Cherry takes a job at a restaurant called “I and I” which was started by a Jew and Arab. These characters strive to put their differences aside and be an example of peace for others. Then tragedy strikes when the restaurant is bombed. With the rebuilding becomes a new business plan.
