The elements of fiction in the novel re-create Skyhorse’s world more effectively than realistic, dialogue or fact-oriented set of remembered events would have created. By using fiction, he is able to give his world a more impactful world for the readers. An important element of fiction that is used throughout the novel is symbolism. Symbolism is used for example, in chapter 8 with Felicia's dog, Blackjack. The dog symbolizes more than just a dog, he is the representation of Echo Park and how Aurora rejects him as she rejects Echo Park. In this chapter, Felicia tries to have Aurora realize that Echo Park is her home by having her accept that she wants to give her Blackjack since Felicia is planning to leave to San Diego with her lover, Vince. …show more content…

It allows the readers to understand it differently so each reader can get their own opinion of what Skyhorse is trying to show with this novel. With this symbolism, the readers can see how there are people that sometimes reject their culture, background, and history as how Aurora was doing by rejecting the dog and at the same time saying that she didn’t know if she could consider Echo Park her home. Skyhorse uses this to portray that at times one's dreams can cause them to think that what they once thought was their home isn’t anymore because they are in the search of something better as how Aurora felt. At the end, that didn’t fulfill her heart because in this chapter she shows how she would like her mother to stay with her and pick her over
