In 2016 slavery was a very bad subject to talk about. Slavery only existed in the north where white northerners pushed slaves around to do their work for them. The slaves only had a certain amount of clothing and food for that year, so they had to stretch it out to make it last. Slaves had to work from the time they got up to the time they went to bed. When Douglass met the family in from Boston, he met a new woman who he fell in love with. He started working there and while he was there, he found out the woman he fell in love with was a slave owner who he was working for. Even though he did love her, he still worked really hard to complete his work. “My new mistress proved to be all she appeared when I first met her at the door,—a woman of the kindest heart and finest feelings. Finding what was coming, I nerved myself up, feeling it would never do to stop work. I stood as long as I could stagger to the hopper with grain. When I could stand no longer, I fell, and felt as if held down by an immense weight. The fan of course stopped; everyone had his own work to do; and no one could do the work of the other and have his own go on at the same time.” He got whipped and beaten because he couldn’t get up to go back to work. He is trying to prove that slavery is terrible for slaves and it can kill them. If they don’t do their work fast enough they can get beaten and even killed. They have to work long, hard hours to get the day done. So slavery is a terrible way of life for those people. They are pushed around to do work everyday from the time they get up to the time they go to
