Abolitionism was a well-known movement around the time of the Civil War and its aim was to put an end to slavery. The people of the early nineteenth century viewed the elimination of slavery in numerous ways. Some fought against the end of slavery, some appeared to mildly support the cause and yet others wholeheartedly supported the ending of slavery until their dying day. Charles Finney was a religious leader who promoted social reforms such as the abolition of slavery. He also fought for equality in education for women as well as for African Americans.
Frederick Douglass was a man of immense courage, whose clear-cut auto biography convinced white Americans of the horrors of slavery, and gave them the ambition to abolish it. Slavery in the states had become a necessary evil to the whites, in which free labor meant growth and development of their home. Frederick Douglass’ expressions of his abhorrence for slavery are apparent in his detailed descriptions of the cruel treatment of masters to all slaves, and their forced illiteracy. The various acts of punishment towards slaves was a common gesture to all with the intentions of teaching the blacks their place in a white man’s world, and Douglass experienced this both by first and second hand experience.
Slavery. The institution which defined the very fabric of American society from its introduction in 1621 to its eventual abolition in 1863; a whole 242 years. During the United States’ not-so-brief tenure as a slave nation, many men and women condemned to chains suffered journeys wrought with peril in search of the liberty that Northern states offered to African-American individuals. This passage from Frederick Douglass’s autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, uses copious metaphor paired with antithesis and apostrophe in order to concretize his longing for and resolution to experience freedom, equality and agency. Douglass cleverly employs metaphor, using it to attach a tangible object to the concept of freedom.

I had some spare time this summer and decided to read Frederick Douglas autobiography. It changed my perspective on slavery. I know what you are thinking, that slavery is a “positive good”. You think that the slaves are less intelligent than whites and are childlike and they need to be taken care of. You believe they live comfortably, that they are not over worked and exchange for the work they do are well fed and well clothed.
The abolitionist movement was a time(1830’s) where there was a strong effort to end slavery in a nation that had valued personal freedom and belief. It started around a saying - “all men are created equal” which was a line that was stated in the Declaration of Independance. In the movement, there were abolitionists, people who favored the thought of eliminating slavery. There were some abolitionists like Frederick Douglas who used the option of nonviolent action, or some like John Brown, who decided to use nonviolent actions. Frederick Douglas was a prominent American abolitionist, author and orator.
Douglass points to the vast unwillingness from the group of whites that refuses to fully perceive and accept African-Americans as deserving and equal citizens of the nation. Based on his personal experiences as a slave, Douglass is abundantly aware that the battle to abolish slavery is not an easy task. For the first twenty years of his life, he witnessed firsthand the abject cruelty of that institution in our country. Tactfully, Douglass seizes this opportunity to publicly highlight the unmerited and coarse differences in the treatment between the whites as opposed to the blacks living in the United States during this time period. He makes a “powerful testaments to the hypocrisy, bigotry and inhumanity of slavery” (Bunch 1).
Douglass stated, “What am I to argue that it is wrong to make men brutes, to rob them of their liberty, to work them without wages, to keep them ignorant of their relations to their fellow-men, to beat them with sticks, to flay their flesh with the lash, to load their limbs with irons, to hunt them with dogs, to sell them at auction, to sunder their families, to knock out their teeth, to burn their flesh, to starve them into obedience and submission to their masters?” He successfully expresses his pain and anger in this quote by providing images of his and his people’s suffering. He tapped into the emotions of his audience, such as mothers, workers, and those who have felt physically pain by exposing them to the amplified struggles he and others had to face. Nonetheless, he continually reminded the audience, both explicitly and subliminally, that his group of people are too human, and that the only difference they share is the color of their skin. He was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough he was a slave and his mother was a black women and his dad was a white man. Frederick Douglass was separated from his mother very but he was only a little kid. He says that he never saw his mother, well to know her as such. The Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass shows the imbalance of power between slaves and their masters. In his book, Douglass proves that slavery is a destructive force not only to the slaves, but also for the slaveholders. “Poison of the irresponsible power” that masters have upon their slaves that are dehumanizing and shameless, have changed the masters themselves and their morality(Douglass 39). This amount of power and control in contact with one man breaks the kindest heart and the purest thoughts turning the person evil and corrupt. Douglass uses flashbacks that illustrate the emotions that declare the negative effects of slavery.
Slavery Essay When one considers the Declaration of Independence, equality, and rights are two principles that are believed to be granted to all. Equality can be defined as everyone having the same thing while rights are granted to you that can’t be taken away. However, Frederick Douglass would not agree with this aligns with slavery. In his narrative, he tells the story of how slaves were treated.
Frederick Douglass’s narrative provides a first hand experience into the imbalance of power between a slave and a slaveholder and the negative effects it has on them both. Douglass proves that slavery destroys not only the slave, but the slaveholder as well by saying that this “poison of irresponsible power” has a dehumanizing effect on the slaveholder’s morals and beliefs (Douglass 40). This intense amount of power breaks the kindest heart and changes the slaveholder into a heartless demon (Douglass 40). Yet these are not the only ways that Douglass proves what ill effect slavery has on the slaveholder. Douglass also uses deep characterization, emotional appeal, and religion to present the negative effects of slavery.
“With them, justice, liberty and humanity were “final”; not slavery and oppression.” This relates to the hardships and the fact that the people don’t recognize how terrible it is. And that these meanings of these “free” words mean something else to him and other slaves. He shows that the changes are hard but once they are made everything will be peaceful. Rhetorical features and strategies are Douglass’ forte’ in engaging with the audience.
