When looking around the room, it is said that people can see exactly the type of person someone is just by watching how they interact with others. This is not always the case although sometimes it can be very true. How people interact with others creates the relationship or bond that the two or three have between each other. There are many different types of relationships that can be created including friendships, dating, and marriage. This is where one will develop an intimate, emotional connection with a man or woman (Austin). Ishmael definitely formed this type of relationship with Hatsue. They shared secrets with each other, and got anxious when going to see one another (Gutterson). But, one could possibly be in another relationship while this is going on or later in this type of relationship. Although nothing physical is really happening besides a few make out sessions there is definitely an emotional connection (Austin). Ishmael was unquestionably emotionally attached to Hatsue and didn’t want to give up on her. Even though Ishmael was inexperienced with love and relationships, he still found a way to express his love and feeling to Hatsue. His love was very real although a bit simplistic. He loved Hatsue and had definite reasons for calling it love. and Kabuo is definitely different than the others, because they had both been best friends during their early childhood years. Although all of that was before the war, the relationship changed throughout the novel because there was still the bitterness of Carl’s mom’s refusal to allow the Miyamotos to take possession of their land. When Kabuo returns from serving in the war in the year of 1945, Etta would not return their family's land to them and she refused to discuss the subject. Also being of separate races, they technically were not allowed to even be friends because of the war
