Personal Response to Snow Falling on Cedars Chapter 11-20 React This wave of chapters was much more insightful into the different characters and their relationships, along with the background information. It starts us off, finally giving us a chapter through the point of view of Kabuo. We see that Kabuo's stoic demeanor is actually impulsive, and he is actually much softer. We learn about Kabuo's feeling of guilt from the war, and belief in karma that makes him feel that he deserves to be convicted for murder. The chess match between Kabuo and Nels seems to be a metaphor used to describe Nels's personality to us, as someone who was calm, collected, and meticulous, and not very aggressive. We learn of how the people of Japanese descent were interned. The description of it all was very touching, including that of the place they lived. The description did not force us to feel, but rather just told us what was happening, in a way that suggested the unfairness, which I think was skilfully handled, especially how We learn the details of Ishmael and Hatsue's relationship and how it came to be. The use of cedar trees in descriptions seem to have grown a lot since the particulars of Ishmael and Hatsue's relationship was divulged, and I feel it is part of a motif, such as for the peacefulness attributed with nostalgia, or maybe for past regrets. I would have found the meetings in the cedar tree to be much more romantic, if I wasn't already under the assumption that Hatsue was forcing herself to like Ishmael; I've been thinking that from the moment that I learnt that she …show more content…
