World War One (WWI) had a colossal impact on the homefront and on the lives of those who returned from the war. Even though the war has been over for almost 100 years it has had a long-lasting effect on all communities of Australia. The impact of the war affected everyone from the lowest in the working class to the richest person in Australia at the time. There was one state that was hit hardest by this new Act, it was Tasmania who traded with Germany, with the mineral ores and also wallaby skins. Those who sold these suffered economically because of this act. Because we stopped trading with some countries we had lost some of the means by which we imported goods. And because of this, we lost some of the necessary things in life. This resulted in the goods that were from the other countries being banned from further trade and the remaining goods from them rose by a dramatic amount. Now because of the war, the price to buy goods went up and also. This caused a lot of families to be even more strained, not only from the taxes from the government but also the not very high pay salary. Because of the war, Britain was brought in, which in return brought all of her colonies in as well, which included Australia. The cost of war is very high and Australia had not have had the time to become established unlike a lot of the countries in Europe. Because of this, we had not have had the time of some other countries to build up our defence forces and also the economy, which is why we went into a “War debt: a debt contracted by the state in order to carry on and pay for the war”. This meant that the country had to pay off this debt to the mother country and to be able to pay it off the government enforced a lot more strict taxes on all citizens.
