Hirschi’s social bond theory can be used to explain why Liam becomes a delinquent. Liam does not have an appropriate attachment with his family as his mother is in prison while he does not have a good relationship with his stepfather and his grandfather. In the movie, Liam shows no clear future goals as if he just live up day by day. It is important for children to go to school and learn an appropriate manners in society and world knowledge, however; he has no commitment to go to school and stay in normal society. For this, it does not help him fosters a sense of social responsibility as well as duty and honor. It’s an explanation that before someone commits a delinquent act, they weigh whether they will experience more loss or benefits. If the benefit outweighs the loss, or the risk; they will do it. In this case of Liam and his friends, they have been doing things like selling untaxed cigarettes for some time and they never get caught, a clear win on their side. Also, they know how to deal drugs and are confident that they won’t get caught, that’s why he stole drugs from his stepfather and make money out of it. So, he considered that selling untaxed cigarettes and stole drugs from his stepfather and sell it can give him a big profits and this will benefits him a lot compare to a small loss in which he need to take some risk. The first focal concern is autonomy, Liam wants to be able to stand for himself without relying on his grandpa or stepfather. He wants to earn money and buy the caravan and be able to look after his mother. We can also see this by Liam reject help from his sister. Liam does not run away from fights and is faced with it showing trouble which is in accordance with Miller. Liam accepts that this is his life that he needs to deal with it and know how to live with it, it is faith. Liam shows toughness by acting in a violent and aggressive way, getting into fights nearly everyday. Smartness is shown in his ability to steal drugs from his stepfather and sell them to earn money. Excitement is seen clearly through Liam’s actions when he laughs and smile, having fun when he caused trouble and ran away from the
