Social class is decided by achieved and ascribed characteristics, and we can change our class by achieved work. Social class has powerful impacts on a person’s life.
Social class by definition is the grouping of people into a set of hierarchical social categories consisting of the lower, middle, and upper classes. It is a term used by many to identify their personal status in their lives. “Popular culture, especially television, has defined what different social class groups are like. The television show The Beverly Hillbillies depicted what happens when people who are poor gain entry into the upper social class. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air showed how people of color in the upper social class live” (Cook, Jennifer M. and Gerard Lawson, 2016).
John Alexander McCrae is remembered and celebrated as world famous Canadian author, poet, doctor, and soldier. He was born on November 30th, 1872 in Guelph, Ontario. McCrae attended the University of Toronto where he achieved his BA in 1894 and, later, his MD, in 1898. After fighting in the South African war from 1899-1901 and regarding the mass spreading of diseases, he studied, and became a noted pathologist. Following years of pathology focused towards clinical work, teaching, and writing, in 1914, McCrae enlisted in the first world war.
The middle class in Great Britain had the right to vote, were usually considered wealthy, but didn’t routinely own servants like the upper class did. Classism Classism is a concept that is learn through socialization. It is an attitude that causes discrimination against others based on their social or economic class, and sometimes perceived classification. The American class system is composed of: underclass, working poor, working class, lower-middle, upper-middle, and upper class. Social class contains a lot of significance in social sciences because it sets the basis for social stratification in which people are grouped into a set of hierarchical social categories. These categories further lead up to class conflicts and social problems which we see in society today. Since the main aim of social sciences is to explain the cause and effect of any social issue, sociologists tend to first explain the definition of class and their interpretation of the term followed by its effects in a society. Among these sociologists there were two very influential personalities who developed their work to explain the definition and the formation of the social class. Karl Marx, being an economist, believes that these social classes are a direct result of economic factors.
Social classes are a form of social stratification that refers to the existence of structured inequalities between individuals and groups in society. A social class is a group of people of comparable status, power and wealth which are usually classified as upper class, middle class, and lower class. For each class, there are some specific opportunities available that influence their social life. We can understand about the particularity of the chances through unequal distribution of these opportunities between individuals in social classes. In here belonging to a social class seems to be an obstacle for some individuals to obtain equal opportunity, unlike upper class people.
