Social Constructionism
Social constructionism was created as an attempt to understand the nature of reality. It is a theory that conveys the importance of not having an obstructive meaning. Individuals in society create their own world based on social interactions, influences, and communications; therefore, every generation has their own perspectives on society and the way the world should function. Throughout this paper, we explained the differences and similarities that we experienced with social constructionism, and how it influenced the perspectives of Generation X versus the Millennial generation.

However, my parents view this differently based on the influences in their culture. They grew up in a society that believed in men being the head of the household while women obeying and respecting their husband. This gender inequality has shaped my parents’ views by the cultural patterns passed on to them from social interactions and influences. In my household, my parents are very strict with me than my younger brother because I am a female. They have the tendency to constantly remind me that because I am a female, I cannot do things my brother can get away with. Such as not having a curfew, being alone with the opposite sex, and requiring permission to go out. As Kathy mentioned before, Generation X believes society should remain the same and untouched while the Millennial generation are socially more liberal and embraces the idea of people being different yet equal. Both Generation X and Millennial Generation clashed against each other based on their personal belief on an idea, which in case ours was the concept of homosexulaity and gender equality. This can be related to the theory of discourse because of the parent(s)’ and child’s social interaction. Therefore, both generations constructed their own social identity by the position they stand in society. In addition, Kathy’s mother and Lois’s parents are from the generation that has a mindset of certain ideas that should remain the same and unchanged, which clashes Kathy’s and Lois’s views of their own
