Discourse Community-The LGBT Community A discourse community is a group of people who come together and share common beliefs or values. I chose to write my essay on the LGBT community. Although I am an outsider, I am interested in the different lexis this community has. I will be applying Swale’s six characteristics of a discourse community to learn about this group. The initials LGBT stand for Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual, and Transgender. The first characteristic is basically an agreed set of public goals put together by this community. In the LGBT community there are many ways that they communicate to their members. Members can find out what’s going on within the community by, newsletter, become active in an online LGBT community forum, as well as with social media, and magazines designed especially for this community. I interviewed Michelle, A good friend of mine and asked her what her role in her community was. She stated she was just a member of an online Lesbian Community. I asked how an outsider like me would be able to identify someone belonging to the community. She said the LGBT community identifies themselves with a rainbow flag. This one talks about the rank of the members in a discourse community. The baby boomers were the first generation to experience the “gay life” outside the closet door. The “old timers” in this community are considered to have more expertise. They have been around long enough and have gone through more obstacles as far as being gay. Not being accepted by their own families and having to hide their true sexuality. The newcomers who are the generation X and millennial have not had it as hard as the silent generation and baby boomers. These days’ people are more aware of how bad the LGBT community has been treated. It was the old timers who worked hard to address the issues and fought hard for gay rights. Today gay marriage is legal in all fifty states. Due to this the newcomers will learn from the old timers how to never give up and fight for the things you love and want.
