Pertaining to the rights of African Americans a new south did not appear after the reconstruction. While they were “free” they were often treated harshly and kept in a version of economic slavery by either their former masters or other white people in power. Sharecropping and the crop-lien system often had a negative impact on both the black and white tenants keeping them in debt with the owner. Jim Crow laws, vigilantes and various means of disfranchisement became the normal way of life in the South. It was believed that white people were superior to black people and when they moved up in politics or socially they were harassed and threatened.
If the American court system only allowed the victims of the crime to testify in court, while neglecting all other evidence and hardly paying attention to the accused, how different would it be compared to trials today? For Salem, Massachusetts, this method of prosecution organization led to one of the most infamous events in pre-Colonial times: The Salem Witch Trials. This incident began in February 1692, and by the time it ended in May 1693, twenty citizens were sent to the gallows, and over one hundred others sat in prison, waiting to be tried for months at a time. What made these trials distinguishable was the judges’ decision to allow spectral evidence. Spectral evidence, by definition, is the testimony of a witness who claimed that the
This paper compares the differences between the lifestyle of churches in Salem and churches now. All the differences put together, preachers in Salem, preachers today, “churchgoers” in Salem, “church goers” today, sermons, topics preached, and the Sabbath day, all show just how much the country has evolved in just this small section of what we call our world. We started with strict laws for religion, amongst them being church attendance, to now lenient personal choices about religion. Government was interlocked with religion in Salem and now you can see a loose connection between the two. Due to the lack of evidence for this time frame, it’s difficult to compare facts. With what we know, we can see from Puritanism to the Enlightenment era
The background essay also states, “However, even without the institution of slavery, the life of a black person in the North was not easy.” This suggested
Watters 7 considered becoming a doctor) although he attended Harvard University for his studies in Greek and Latin and graduated with a Master’s degree presented to him by his father, who was also the president of the college. Growing up in a strict home, where his father was a very highly respected Puritan, gave him very little room to have an imagination, just like many other Puritan children. But, like most children, Mather always was curious about the supernatural world and that only increased as he became more educated. “Like most educated people of the Western world, Mather believed that certain individuals had entered into compacts with the Devil and given up their souls in return for the powers of witchcraft” (#8.) Mather really researched the Devil and his witches which led him to publish his book, Memorable Providences Relating to Witchcraft and Possession in 1689, about his research and observations on witchcraft.

Individuals along with their expected social norms, challenges the overall political authority of the Salem community. Since Salem is a highly religious community, religion and power are ultimately intertwined and come hand in hand. Meaning during this time the expectations of a typical Salem citizen was to be a God fearing Christian and to devote their time to participating in church affairs because it reflected the power and authority of the court. And John Proctor a typical Salem citizen challenges Salem’s political authority through his lack of participation in church affairs as Hale, a minister of Salem questions his participation, “I note that you are rarely in the church on Sabbath Day… Twenty-six time in seventeen month, sir. I must
This book is an intriguing account of witch trials, American colonial political impotence, and ecclesiastical ignorance as well as general crowd hysteria. This is also a coming-of-age story about Sarah Carrier who is 10 years old at the time of the Salem, Massachusetts witch hunts and trials. Relying to some extent on family oral history since one of her ancestors was executed at the trials as well as her own research into the period, the author creates an intriguing story that explores the nature of fear, love, kindness, and forgiveness. Neither the author nor publisher gives any reckoning of how much of this story is historical fiction and how much is actual fact. By default, the book must be classed as historical fiction and for young adults but its uniqueness and narrative ingenuity could be greatly enhanced for the reader if these proportionalities were made explicit.
In 1692, people were accused of casting spells, which meant they were siding with the devil in Salem, New England. Many people who lived in the countryside of Salem believed that the Holy Bible were God’s direct words and should be followed precisely. Women were more likely to be accused of casting spells because they were expected to be at home, listen to their husband, and weren’t aloud to be ministers so there were more likely to preach the devil. People believe that women aren’t good enough and men are superior to women, even now in this century. There is still a pay in inequality between the average men and women.
In the late 1600s, the conflict arose when many possessed girls accused innocent people of witchcraft in Salem. The people of Salem were Puritans (Wilson). The Puritan religion believed that Satan was trying to turn the people away by bringing witches to Salem. In February of 1692, a doctor in Salem concluded the girls were “bewitched” (Sutter). They believed the girls were bewitched because they were not acting normal.

Moreover, when blacks moved
SECTION I: There are tales that we remember since we were kids. Those tales that we were told about witches and demons who would haunt us in our sleep. Now that we are older we may not believe, but in the year where it all began 1692, all those stories really seemed to be true. Over two-hundred people were accused of witchcraft and twenty (most likely innocent) people were killed during the Salem Witch Trials of 1692; this becoming one of America's most compelling and darkest mysteries in history.
Ever since its creation, religion has been a major form of human culture, expression and faith. However, this principle has also created numerous differences between people. Although variation increases diversity, a multitude of negative impacts have also occurred. These repercussions include the creation of religious stereotypes and spirituality-based social classes. Therefore, religion is a precept embedded in historical and current culture that drives the creation of social statuses and stereotypes.
The most memorable vacation I’ve been on was my trip to Salem, Massachusetts. It was February 2012, we left at 9pm so we could sleep all day the day before, so we could drive the 8 hours to Salem. I packed lots of long sleeved shirts, jeans, hoodies as well as heavy jackets and boots. I got my camera and I packed snacks and a cooler for drinks and sandwiches for the ride to Salem.
