Social media has recently erupted within the past decade and is showing no signs of slowing down. New apps emerge and become the figurative “top dog” of the marketing charts and dominate aspects of a lot of teenagers and adolescents’ lives including social hierarchy, sexual tendencies, and even depression has had a correlation with these sites. But overall is social media bad for college students’ health? A study by Doctor Larry D. Rosen from California State University put together a list of unhealthy traits that are linked to social media. Starting that list is that younger facebook users seem to be more narcissistic than others that do not, however I believe a lot of variability comes with that. Rosen even believes that the over use of social media can lead you to sorts of hysteria or mania. His last point discussing the negatives is that it can distract you from your school work leading college students to be more complacent and lazy when it comes to school work. I can certainly attest and back Rosen’s claims on this claim based on my personal experience. Rosen also credits social media for some positive growth due to social media. He says that cyber empathism is a real thing and those that use their social media are known to be more empathetic online towards their friends emotions’. Rosen also claims that those that are already pre-dispositioned to anxiety can help find some extroverted tendencies that relieve these stressful real life interactions and mask themselves behind “a 17-inch laptop.” His last note on positivity is that using social media can be a component for a teacher that is striving towards success.
