Social media in the 21st century is the new way for people to express themselves freely. As social media begins to expand and make communication easier for people, social media is also affecting basic human interaction. Outlets such as Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat create a network for people to communicate without having to look someone in the eye. With an infraction on human interaction, it brings along the problem of people hiding how they truly feel and invokes people to be less social.
With smartphones being so greatly apart of people’s lives, social media has the potential to make people less social. “We’re becoming unsocial, it no longer satisfies to engage with one another, and look into someone’s eyes.” (Turk). “We edit and exaggerate, we crave adulation, we pretend we don’t notice the social isolation.” (Turk) As people begin to lie and exaggerate about they feel, they create problems for themselves and others. People may assume that someone else is okay because of what they post or write on social media, but they will not know for certain. In some cases, people may need serious help but because of how they act on social media no one else can be there to help. “It’s only when we hear a tone of voice or look into someone’s eyes that we’re able to know when “I’m fine” doesn’t mean they’re fine at all….” (Is Social Media Sabotaging Real Communication). Human interaction can help people determine if someone is really okay or not. If human interaction slowly diminishes then that may lead to more cases of social isolation; which can cause people to develop social
