Social mores are those unwritten rules that dictate how we act in public. They are the things that irritate the general public, like when a person is walking on the “wrong side” of the sidewalk. No law governs which side a person should use, but society expects that one would use the same as what they would drive. If a person enters an elevator and faces the back rather than the front, not only will it make others uncomfortable, but it will be uncomfortable for that person as well. In a similar fashion, attempting to go against the socially expected behaviors for one’s gender is uncomfortable to the point of avoidance.

Through our experiences growing up in a certain society, we form schemas about different situations, and these schemas influence our actions. At first, these societal norms are often thought of as common knowledge, and breaking them is considered “strange” or “weird,” but it is necessary to acknowledge that all of these norms are created by society collectively, and that breaking them is only thought of as unusual because it doesn’t conform to any standards or expectations. While breaking the societal norm of holding the door open by holding it open for a longer period of time, I observed the confused and surprised reactions of individuals who weren’t used to this deviation in behavior pattern. Through observing people’s changes in behavior during the task, it is evident that people’s initial reactions to breaking societal norms is a state of anxiety and confusion. This state of anxiety causes people to immediately make internal attributions about those who break societal norms that they are bizarre.
In the book hard times the conflict was how schools try to conform kids to society instead of individuality and try to make them into a mass of just fact machines basically the conflict here adds to the story because to show readers it's ok to be different and not just follow what people say and be different from society because creativity is very important without it we wouldn't have art and music if we all followed social norms we would just be mindless drones. Mr. gradgrind the teacher wants to teach the kids pure facts and just have them be as compliant as possible so they just follow directions right off the bat like one kid talked about having flowers on the wall or floor and gradgrind said it was basically im possible cause flowers
For our group and our shared love of food we figured that a social norm that had something to do with that would be perfect for us. We decided that the norm to drive through a drive thru needed to be tested. Why should cars be the only ones with the fast access to fast food at their convenience? We believed that people should be able to walk through the drive thrus if it is more convenient for them.
For my second experiential learning assignment, I decided to break a social norm while going out to eat with my family at a restaurant: granted this is something I have a habit of doing but the reaction I got from my dining mates was particularly interesting this time. To give a little bit of background of the setting I was in at the time, I was with my mother, younger brother, and my mother’s friend at a restaurant in DC for my birthday dinner. The restaurant was crowded, but not many people were paying attention to what we were doing. The behavior I decided to break was dipping my fingers in the container caramel was in and then proceeded lick my fingers after doing so. The butler was in charge of setting up the dining table. The butler was supposed to arrange all the place settings for every person with the correct silverware for every occasion and the various crystal glasses which were used to serve the various wines which went with the respective items on the menu. The space between two persons on the table and the distance between the chair and table were accurately measured and set. There were specific spoons, forks and knives for the specific delicacies. The men and women were to eat every dish in a certain manner with absolutely no use of their hands.
Social norms are rules that have been ingrained in society and people for hundreds of years. These societal rules can be anything from not talking to strangers on the subway to wearing weather appropriate clothes in public. Yet, when these societal norms are broken, the observers, as well as the person who destroyed the norm, are affected. Societal norms play in large role in how a person conducts him or herself when interacting with others. When deciding what social interaction, I would break, I wanted to do something that would be easy for me to fully commit to without facing too much embarrassment.
A lot of Russia’s culture, like most, comes from it’s long history. Russians, just like many others, enjoy having a good time; yet they are known as stoic people, who rarely smile. Not smiling to strangers is a cultural norm that seems strange to Westerners. In Russia, smiles are not linked to politeness, and the smiling out of politeness that is so common in the West is seen as insincere, and indicators of ones’ secrecy and unwillingness to show their true feelings. The countries long history of many wars, invasions, and repressions by leaders (both tsars and the Soviet leaders) could have influenced this social norm.
In today's society, the balance between individualism and conformity to society's expectations is a prominent and deceptive conflict. Oftentimes, the individual must put his uniqueness aside and settle for a view of an occupation, hobby, or idea that society agrees with. Instead of expressing original and creative ideas, they are held hostage by comparing themselves with the lives and accomplishments of others and the standards their our society. One of the biggest tools of society, social media, allows people to share ideas and interests with everyone. However, naturally, one will only post what he knows others will accept and enjoy just as he does.
Introduction Norms, values and socialisation are undoubtedly one of the most important fundamentals in sociology, and I have been fascinated by how these social factors affect and influence the “little man.” (Mills 1946) Throughout this short essay, I will explore these social factors influence the individual and society in the world in which we live. Norms Norms are an expectation about appropriate behaviour in a society.
Deviance is a term used when a person violates a social normality. Deviance can be minor or they can be extreme. Using public behavior for example, if a person were to walk around without shoes in public, it would be considered odd and deviant behavior. Or if a person invaded someone 's space it would be considered rude and questionable behavior. My reasoning for not breaking social normality is simple: to break a social normality would be considered odd and I would rather not be percieved as such.
Culture is the way of life. Culture is generally the beliefs, behaviors, practices, and artifacts a social group shares with each other through commonality. This is rather interchanged with “society” which is difference because society talks about the people who share a common territory or definable region and culture. Culture will not exists without a society, and neither would society exists without culture. Culture consists of two types: material culture, the tangible objects that may be used as symbols to cultural ideas or belongings to society, and nonmaterial culture, the ideas and attitudes of a society, of which both types are linked to each other.
Social Problems in Societies Social problems are issues which are considered to affect majority if not all members of a society either directly or indirectly. Whenever people come to live together in a social setting, conflict arises from their differences in opinions regarding political issues, religion, ethnic issues, cultural practices and other health and hygiene issues. In such a situation, we can say a society inevitably develops social problems. The various social issues present today vary from society to society, and as such, we cannot say that all societies face similar social issues.
