The sociological concept, social norms, is applicable to the content in the article “What is social construction?” written by Paul A. Boghossian because norms are socially constructed. Social constructionism only exists because people give things reality through social agreement. Social constructionism also requires a society and is based on that specific society, varying depending on the needs or values of that group of people. Norms are socially constructed expectations that effect individual’s behaviors and influence why people act certain ways depending on the context of the situation. Social norms could not possibly exist without the presence of a society.
Modern society has social expectations, which dictate how people should behave, and how they should live. People are often expected to feel and act a certain way that may not always fit their personality. Behaviors and desires such as wearing clothes like everyone else and saying please and thank you, are considered social norms. Social norms tend to act as a buffer, keeping individuals in line, and setting unspoken boundaries. However, for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction.
Imagine a world with no literature or love or hope. Imagine a world with no stability or order or government. Either extreme would seem to result in complete chaos; however, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World dares to challenge this universal truth. By creating a society where the idea of emotional drive is foreign, Brave New World strives for “Stability, Community, and Identity.” Brave New World controller, Mustapha Mond, however, believes in Brave New World’s theology but not enough to diminish his own illegal past-times; thus, Huxley illustrates the self-seeking nature of man.

These social roles are behaviors that are expected of someone in a particular status. One single status can have a number of different roles which makes up the role set. As a girl, I feel like I am expected to perform the roles of being respectful, pleasant, and lady-like. As a daughter, my role set includes obeying my parents, being honest, working hard, and doing my best. Being an eighteen year-old gives me the roles of having fun but not too much fun.
In this study chosen, “Perceived marijuana norms and social expectancies among entering college student marijuana users,” the research and experiment correlated the perceived social norms and compared them to the out come expectancies of marijuana use, as well as, the related consequences. The results of the study showed that the descriptive norms and expectancies are positively associated to the consequences of marijuana use. However, the injunctive norms are negatively associated with consequences when the levels of both descriptive norms and expectations are elevated during a situation. Subjects were assessed for, “their marijuana use, related consequences, perceived norms, and social expectancies related to marijuana use.”
Ever since I was allowed to date, I was taught that the man is supposed to pay for the dinner bill. The man paying the bill rule is definitely supposed to be obeyed when you are dating. The man is also supposed to open all doors and pull out the lady’s chair. Let all alone, the man is supposed to pick the lady up and drive to the date . In today’s society, the public is commonly influenced by something, whether its friends, social media, or even television. We are all looking to be accepted one way or another, and to gain that acceptance we are willing to comply to be acknowledged or welcomed into a group. Human beings are peer pressured to conform to certain types of behavior in fear of being rejected by their group. When in a group, there are expectations one must meet and obey, so as to not be rejected, some expectations can vary from what type of music you listen to, or even as to what clothing store you should buy your clothes at. The influence people can have over you can vary from moderate to severe (Social Psychology, 2013).
Thirteen-year-old Genie was found tied to a potty chair on November 4th, 1970, wearing a diaper and unable to talk. Unaware of the outside world and societal norms, Genie was known as the first modern wild child. Genie was locked in her basement for almost her complete life, unable to learn from others and have the opportunity to mentally develop. Through her attempts at rehabilitation by a number of doctors, Genie was able to learn social norms, develop a sense of self and expand her agents of socialization. As Genie learned and explored her new community, she was qualified to adapt to some societal norms.
