The New Deal program I chose to research is the Social Security act. This has done a lot for the American people. Enacted under FDR’s first term, the Social Security Act acted as a relief of sorts, for the elderly, disabled, as well as other people in need. When FDR enacted the SSA, it came under scrutiny from his political opponents. The SSA was argued to kill jobs, as well as exclude both women and minority groups from obtaining the benefits of this act.
Despite coming under scrutiny, the SSA has its benefits. The SSA helps relieve certain groups of people from hardships they endure in their lives. For example, many elderly people cannot work for themselves, and as such, have no way to provide themselves with the necessary income to maintain a comfortable living environment. Despite being a widely popular program amongst nearly all American people, it is a hot topic for debate on Capitol Hill. Talks of cutting Social Security benefits have caused a small uproar amongst the people and families of people that rely on their Social Security benefits to live. Both sides of the US political system, Democratic and Republican leaders have been trying to find compromises to potentially cut corners on the Social Security benefits many people rely on.
I feel that this program is in fact valuable today. Firsthand experiences of people who need Social Security have shown that it can be very valuable for people. My Great Grandmother collects Social Security. Without it, her financial situation would be severely hindered. It enables her to be able to pay the bills, car payments, medical bills,
