The Los Angeles County, Department of Public Social Services serves over three million residents today. Out of the three million plus residents, my family is one of them. My family receives the help and benefits that the Department of Social Services provides and offers. As a member of society, my family and me really appreciate what the county has to offer and are thankful because the government sees how the society is struggling. The three million residents that receive help from the government today will slowly increase as the years go by and more services will be needed. In the future, I want to try to improve the society. AID is a program designed by the government of Taiwan to assists students with disadvantages. During the five week program, I taught elementary school students English. I was assigned to a school more in the countryside, where resources were very limited to students. As the weeks went by, I learned a lot about my students. I was able to teach them English, while providing a brief background of western culture. I remember that some of the students in my class were very unpleasant to deal with. After each school day, I would have meetings with the other teachers. During the meetings, I found out why some students in my class acted the way they acted. I found out that their family goes through a lot of troubles, so their family issues affect how those students act. This five weeks teaching experience really opened up my eyes. Since I am considered to be a city kid, I really saw the difference between city kids and countryside kids. Countryside kids, like my students, value opportunities more because they are not as privileged as city kids are. I liked how this experience gave me the opportunity to help the less fortunate and widened my perspective. I feel like being a sociology major will really benefit me because it will makes me a critical thinker, it will improve my communication skills and it will help me gain a global perspective on my
